Thread: I was reading Alice in wonderland

Since it's public domain you can find it online for free. I got to say when I read the first chapter, it wasn't what I thought it would be like. Writing has seriously changed over the years.

In today's world, I doubt with the publishers expectations such books would never meet the light of day. There was just something about it that made me want to tear it apart and rewrite it. Alice has a nasty habit of voicing the strangest inner dialogue, for example she wishes "she could fold up like a telescope" to fit through a door. Perhaps its just a time gap...

I have a certain writing style I think would be equally unapreciated in today's environment.

I don't know much about classic literature (although Alice is a favourite of mine), but I think that is one of the reasons why it is a classic. Alice is a unique character expressing herself in odd ways in a world completely unheard of at that time.

Heh, go read the real classics like Robinson Crusoe, The Swiss Family Robinson, and A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court. The unabridged versions, of course.

Authors today can hardly compare with the mastery of words and imagination present in Mark Twain's work, or the family values and character inherent in The Swiss Family Robinson. Daniel Defoe's writing style is unique, as well.

The book makes a lot more sense when you read it from the perspective of a drug trip, which is the perspective it was written from. To put it simply, Alice is tripping. The things she says and does fits perfectly within that framework.

The only thing that has changed over the years is that drug use doesn't seem to be as popular among writers as of late. Most likely due to it being illegal.

Who cares if I would have thought that way? Just because I wouldn't have thought of something in a certain way doesn't make it strange. I just don't think the quote you used was particularly odd.

I do agree though, you picked one of the more logical things that she says for an example. Wishing to fold up because the door is too small is not that strange.

But then again it is an opinion...I guess I'm just a minority here.

I suppose my thinking isn't nearly as creative as hers. The chances are slim if a tv remotes out of reach that I'm going to wish my arm could strech like a tape measurer.

Alice in Wonderland is full of ingenious symbolism. Besides the fact that it already appealed to me from when I was little... more and more elements of the text became clear to me when I read it again later on.

Like the rabbit, a cowardly extremely anxious figure, could very well represent that side of adults and their obsession with time. Think about it, terms like spending time, wasting time etc. all link to one thing: money. Since when can something so precious become a currency?

It may have a peculiar sense of metaphor but I think the book just needs a different angle to be appreciated.
