Factoring in only 'livable areas' is very narrow. What about the waste that is produced from soo many humans? The increasing of socially inept behaviours that eats away at the fabric of scoiety? The lack of land needed to create edible foods while also proving areas to live while we consume these things?

If the trend as i see it now (IMO) continues, we will be a world society of consumers for the sake of consuming. We will surround ourselves with gadgets, gizmos, whatchamacallits and things of simple ornamental value until they become boring and are tossed away.

Also, we have to take into account the areas of the world that are not able to be inhabited by humans or many animals. Even these are necessary for our survival in the livable areas. If those areas are off-balanced by the effects we have in the livable areas then soon the blowback will come for us where we live.
An example of this is the ecosystem of the Sahara desert. The winds that circulate through that area eventually bring precipitation to the drier areas and allow for life to flourish for a brief period of time before it has to migrate on again.
If humans take up all the livable space and leave areas like this alone, the impacet will be quite intense. The animals that can only survive in that area of the desert because of yearly precipitation will not be able to move on to the more lush areas of land in the dry season since it may be occupied by all these humans trying to survive in greater and greater numbers.

i read this and became very interested. look for the graph.

i just think that people are just overreacting, like they do with everything. we are a world of overreactors....

I believe there are too many people for the amount of work possible...

In my opinion, industrialize Africa to be a Production-oriented continent, and ship off all the homeless and unworthy there to produce goods. That will help overpopulation in our areas, and give the people of Africa a purpose in life rather than just waiting for the next shipment of foreign "aid" that is merely increasing the problem.

Also, sterilize those with an IQ of lower than a certain number... We used to do this, why stop? The world is evolving, help the process of natural selection. The principle of survival of the fittest cannot survive unless we, the strong, fight against the weak.

If we do not procreate, and only adopt, the world will stagnate intellectually... I'd rather have an intelligent child descended from me than a moron I picked up at the McKids that 2 crackheads convieved at an orgy during a Mormon death metal concert.

So communist sounding, but it can't be denied that I agree. I suppose it would be good for humanity overall if those possessing extremely undesirable genes were sterilized, but then the masses would pull some huge rights movement and start having more fuckfests and deformed kids with more extra toes than IQ points.

I'm glad this came up! It is another interesting point.

I still think about this sometimes, but I have decided that since it takes hundreds of years to notice any significant difference as far as selection is concerned; I simply think that the ethical and global implications take priority.

Furthermore, I was surprised to hear this, but IQ has actually been rising in recent years. It is not genetic, it is to do with how we condition our children to think as they develop. Someone who grew up in the Mideast around dark-age style Muslims (or for that matter just a Texan) may have been conditioned to think illogically even if genetically they had a high IQ, so they will remain in this style of thinking for the rest of their lives.

It's all to do with brain development. IQ isn't just a genetic trait, the ability to think logically is a possible 'pathway' that you can condition people to take through education. In some populations people may batter down the intelligent people and as their brain develops their neurones shall default to illogical ways of thinking; whether or not it was in their genes.

I guess this one isn't conclusive and I know you will still have doubts by now, but on a final note: to adopt a child who genetically has a 'lower' IQ is still likely to slow down the chav-takeover. I have NO expectations of trying to overpopulate stupid people because it aint gonna happen! But we can slow this forecasted gene-pool pollution long enough for the world to get on some kind or rails.

Communist? I think it's more fascist sounding; Social Darwinism. =) And though it may seem that the masses would pull a rights movement, I think that the masses really would generally support and/or be indifferent to this. It's just that the masses are silent while the neo-hippycommies are loud and obnoxious in spreading their views.

Thanks for the reply! That is surprising that IQ is increasing.

I agree that adopting a child would still help against the chav-takeover. However, if we just sterilize the chavs to begin with, we get rid of the problem... Then this leads to the problem of eliminating the working class. If only we had robots for everything... One day.

Preventing low-IQ parent's from having children theoretically is a good idea, and so is communism. But, as with communism, the question is always: who decides? If people with a low IQ are to be sterilised, who sets the threshold level? What intelligence test do we use? What about other groups that hold back society? Athiests? Theists? Muslims, catholics, mormons? Death metal fans? Intelligent design supporters? WHO DECIDES?.... and who decides who decides?

I don't at all agree with the idea of forcing bums to live on another continent. That is slavery, and it is out of the question. I also don't believe in forced sterilization. That would be a crime against humanity. However, I do believe in offering incentives for sterilization. Offer $200 to anybody who gets sterilized. Then most of the people who would be hurting the world by reproducing will not reproduce, and it will be their choice. The government does not have to be the body that make the deals. Volunteer organizations could do it. It is ethical, and it would solve a great deal of social problems.

I skimmed through this thread, so, not sure if someone already mentioned this. First off, if anyone here has studied human geography, you would know that the Total fertility rate(TFR) is around 2 for most countries excluding countries like India or China which means that the population has stabilized. The world at the moment isn't overpopulated based on this. It's only countries like India or China where the populations went through the roof, but, other parts of the world have populations that have stabilized.

From what I got from your post, you seem to be saying that the world is overpopulated and that people shouldn't be having children. I gave you a reason why I think it isn't overpopulated. As for the people shouldn't be having children, well, people have the right to have children. You can't deny them from having their own child because YOU think it's selfish. It's your opinion. Personally, if someone has a child and they don't care about him/her, mistreat him/her or possibly puts him/her up for adoption, then yes, those people shouldn't have children at all, because, they brought a child into this world that they didn't care about, but, if someone is interested in raising their own child and taking care of them, then yes, they have the right to do so. There are people who are interested in having their own children, not adopting, but, they donate to charities that help these orphaned children. As for the graph you posted some posts back, it's obvious that'll happen, but, you seem to forget that as much growth as the human race has had, there has always been some kind of feedback or regulation in place to prevent growth that can't be sustained by the planet. What i mean is that we had the 1918 flu pandemic which killed 25million people or it might have been 50 million. We are long overdue for one now which would likely kill over 100 million people, most being in the 20-40 range which is for lack of a better word, reproduction range, since, most people have kids in that range. In the end, it's the people's own choice to adopt or procreate and you can't force them to do one way or another.
I have to agree with those that stated that your opinion will change in a couple of years time. When you are young and at your age, you have certain opinions but as you grow older, have more interactions with people, see the world for what it is, etc.... you're opinions about certain subjects will change. Mine did and I'm sure everyone's opinions have changed as they matured.

Thanks for the quote! That is a good one.

And some countries really do have too many children being born.. we need to keep the trees alive!!

      Perfect reply.

It would be hipocritical and bigoted to forcibly sterilise people.

I would rather castrate myself than have kids. I might pussy out if put in the situation, but still, metaphorically speaking, I would rather rip my balls off.
