My best guess would be that we lost our physical ability to strategic warfare
over time, as the stronger man filled the infantry role and more or less likely
died before having children. The intelligent ones were kept for their value as
strategists and leaders of the community. If chimpanzees are able to
strategize on a basic level, somewhere down the line we must have seen the
value in filling roles based on how qualified one was to fill it (the most
primitive example being the argument over who gets to be leader of the
tribe). Even in labour positions the expected lifespan is shorter.

We (human beings) often tend to prefer either the physical or the intellectual
over the other. It should follow that those who tended to the physical
aspect of human developement due to genetic predisposition were at higher
risk of death-before-mating. Strategizing as a social creature, beyond only
warfare, was a key element to our survival in the tribe all on its own.
