      Terence McKenna

I have hear so much about him, and about his DMT trips and stuff, but can you guys explain what exactly he is and a bio of him? this is so if i wanna learn about him, i can read this post instead of get info from here and there. I know there are a lot of McKenna fans in here and talk about him in philosophy and stuff. This is more for educational purposes.

So far all i pretty much know of him is he sounds exactly like my dentist.

All you know about him is that he sounds like your dentist? That's not very much.
Then I wonder why you called him a stoned moron in a previous post.
You shouldn't judge what you don't know. Instead you should study what you don't know.

I believe it isn't too much trouble to google for Terrence mcKenna and find some good info. Wikipedia will have alot of info on him.
He has given countless lectures which can be viewed on youtube.

I'm not behind myown PC right now, but when I get back home I'll supply you with plenty of movies and links that will tell you inside out who Terrence McKenna is and what he did(He passed away not very long ago)

I think he's the kind of person that won't be easily explained in a couple of words. I guess Psychonaught, Philosopher and Anthropologist are 3 words that kind of come close.

Here is a pretty good Podcast with talks and lectures from people
like Timothy Leary, Alan Watts, Alex Grey, the Shulgins, etc. and a ton
and probably everything that's out there from Terence McKenna. So, if
you want to know what he's all about, I'd suggest just listening to what
he has to say. There is much much more than just his DMT talks.

Well he was a scientist, spiritualist, plant studier, and philosopher all rolled into one.

The difference between Terence McKenna and normal stoned morons is that normal stoned morons don't write down thier drug-induced visions and try to have them passed as legitimate scientific theories.

      @Caprisun

He doesn't pass anything off as science.
I do think you have to actually use your brain, while
listening to him, but he is not just some stoned moron.
Then so would be Alan Ginsberg, Sartre or many other
great people, who have enhanced their minds with
      'external help'.

      @LucidFlanders

The Fairy thing is just him talking about what happens
to him after he used DMT. It's really just a very small
part of what he's all about. I know you didn't suggest that,
but often times people are judging over everything he
says, because of one talk or theory (like timewave zero).

Mckenna is smarter wiser than everyone on this forum.

I can bet all the people talking bad about him on here havn't even looked into his work. Typical.

Something about Novelty Theory...which is something about 2012.

      Yeah he's a stoned moron.

I don't agree with the mystical side of Terence McKenna's teachings, but I am a big fan of him and his ideas. He is a real trip. He is like the Mr. Rogers of psychedelics.

Thanks for illustrating my last point exactly.

      Edit:

I'd like to add a little something to 2012 in general.
You got to keep in mind that he was speaking (partly)
about 2012 as one of the first in western culture ever.
There was no hype or anything at that time. It was in
      the late 70's.

The alternative physics is a physics of light. Light is composed of photons, which have no antiparticle. This means that there is no dualism in the world of light. The conventions of relativity say that time slows down as one approaches the speed of light, but if one tries to imagine the point of view of a thing made of light, one must realize that what is never mentioned is that if one moves at the speed of light there is no time whatsoever. There is an experience of time zero. ... The only experience of time that one can have is of a subjective time that is created by one's own mental processes, but in relationship to the Newtonian universe there is no time whatsoever. One exists in eternity, one has become eternal, the universe is aging at a staggering rate all around one in this situation, but that is perceived as a fact of this universe — the way we perceive Newtonian physics as a fact of this universe. One has transited into the eternal mode. One is then apart from the moving image; one exists in the completion of eternity.
Can somebody guide me through the logic and meaning of this quote of his?

His degree is in ecology and conservation, not physics. From the sounds of it he knows very little about special relativity which he tries to speak about authoritatively but really sounds quite ignorant if you're familiar with it. He suggests that physics somehow 'hides' the fact that the speed of time tends towards 0 as one tends towards the speed of light, when really physics is what predicts this in the first place. It doesn't actually follow however from his statement that 'time slows down as one approaches the speed of light'. He also suddenly starts talking about a Newtonian universe when he was previously talking about the theory which openly contradicts Newton's.

The guy might have some good philosophical ideas but I don't think he's qualified to talk about things related to science or physics in particular. I can't personally make any sense scientifically or just logically of the above quote.

Technically it was the Mayans, who started this hype long before him

And it's not popular because of him either, I'd say.
But all of that isn't even that important.

He came up with a theory about timewave zero, that everything
ends in a singularity. This and the 2012 thing seem to be the
things most people think about, when thinking about McKenna,
even though they have been more or less refuted (of course).
To me, both of them aren't very good examples. But I agree
with you on that part, he is a philosopher, not a scientist. And
I think that when you listened to him long enough, or don't
just focus on one paragraph, it becomes clear that he isn't trying
      to be scientific.

(I'm not even going to start arguing for timewave zero)

Hm. Certainly seems like a poor kind of argument. Sure, photons don't experience time, but... humans aren't photons, and we aren't going to become photons. :l

I don't agree with Terence's Novelty Theory and all the Timewave Zero stuff, but then again Mckenna would have been the first to say that doesn't matter, life is much more subjective than accepting everything that a man has to say just because you agree with his general worldview. If you want to learn about the man, learn about his ideas, watch the videos with him talking and read the transcripts of his speeches.
Most of any discussion revolving around Mckenna will be incredibly subjective, but there's a couple of things that even his most ardent opponent would find it hard to refute. Firstly, that he was a man of extraordinary intelligence. Secondly, his manipulation of the English language is incredible, his words are like music, seriously, I'd say he's the greatest linguist I've ever read. And finally, his intentions were good. he saw something very wrong with the world and wanting so much to change it, he was a good person.
The rest you should find out for yourself; whether you agree or disagree with his work is almost irrelevant, because it doesn't stop you appreciating it.

If your not into hallucinogenic drugs, there is other places for you to start when it comes to reading Terence. His ideas on culture and its corruption are amazing, he talks about the way in which we fetishize items and erect belief systems in favour of direct experience. All really simple yet, important ideas.

      That's just immature and unnecessary.

We're playing with half a deck as long as we tolerate that the cardinals of government and science should dictate where human curiousity can legitimately send its attention and where it can not. It's an essentially preposterous situation.

A lot of people pass through the thinking I'm a guru and take enough trips to understand that no, I was just a witness. I was just a witness.

The real secret of magic is that the world is made of words, and that if you know the words that the world is made of you can make of it whatever you wish. (That's fucking beautiful, complete mastery of the English language)

You are an explorer, and you represent our species, and the greatest good you can do, is to bring back a new idea, because our world is in danger by the absence of good ideas. Our world is in crisis because of the absence of consciousness

We are caged by our cultural programming. Culture is a mass hallucination, and when you step outside the mass hallucination you see it for what it's worth

What blinds us, or what makes historical progress very difficult, is our lack of awareness of our ignorance. And [I think] that beliefs should be put aside, and that a psychedelic society would abandon belief systems [in favor of] direct experience and this is, I think much, of the problem of the modern dilemma, is that direct experience has been discounted and in its place all kind of belief systems have been erected... If you believe something, you're automatically precluded from believing in the opposite, which means that a degree of your human freedom has been forfeited in the act of this belief.

Just a little introduction to some of Terence's words for those who can't be arsed to do the research themselves.
