hey there,
well i was looking around for any sort of scientific research on this matter and the only things i've come upon are related to sleep deprivation and usually visual hallucinations. I'll keep you posted if i find anything noteworthy.
As for me, I experience audio hallucinations regularly, and like you, just before sleep. It is, in fact, for me a sure fire way to know that i am about to fall asleep. The earliest that I can remember it happening was when I was about 8: I remember laying in between my parents one night and i started to doze off when I heard something like a radio station playing. I think my father coughed or something and that shocked me right out of the mild sleep and I realized what I was hearing wasn't corpo real at all. After that it was a long while before i started noticing them again, but recently due to my sleep schedule (as a college student its been changing at break neck speeds), and this new job that I have which forced me to fix the schedule, i have been having the a.hallucinations, as i said before, nightly. Just last night it was a semi-lucid conversation that i was having with someone that sounded a lot like Janis Joplin (go figure), but usually they are just noises from all sorts of land and city scapes. I am a pretty frequent lucid dreamer, so I wonder if this has anything to do with it,
Anyway, i hope this helped in some way, i'll keep you posted on anything i find,
peace,
dave
