I know SP is common and hallucinations during SP are normal, but I would like to know how many of you have experienced similar hallucinations and how often do you guys experience natural SP?
Yes, I have had a lot of these. These were my first experiences with lucid dreams. I now lucid dream several times per week and my conclusion about sleep paralysis episodes is that they are lucid dreams during a different stage of the sleep cycle.
There are two types of SP: hypnagogic and hypnapompic. Both are stages of sleep. The former is when you first fall asleep and the latter is right before you wake up. I've had both many times. Hypnagogia is characterized by the feeling of impending doom and the presence of evil.
My early episodes of hypnagogic SP used to terrify me. I've had several sorts. I've levitated just off the bed, floated off the bed, floated around the room wildly with no control, vibrated along with the bed like a sine wave, choked by a demon-like creature on my chest, repetitive false awakenings, and very vivid out-of-body experiences.
They used to terrify me and I hated when it would happen. I would panic and try to force myself to wake up. Nowadays, I see it as an initial stage to pass through when having a Wake Initiated LD. There seems to still be the presence of evil (not nearly as bad), but I pass through the stage quickly, within 10 seconds. It always occurs in my immediate environment (eg., bedroom), I usually float and everything is dark (lack of bright colors, lack of light). Sometimes there are also visual hallucinations (demon on chest, writing on wall, to name a few) and auditory hallucinations (footsteps, rocking chair).
Having hypnagogia is GREAT. That means you're having a Wake Initiated LD. Don't panic. Don't wake up. Try to focus on the fact that it's just a stage of sleep that you have to go through when having a Wake Initiated LD. Stick through it and very soon you will have a peaceful, non-frightening lucid dream. The fear will quickly dissipate as you pass through the stage.
Lucid dreams that begin with hypnagogic sleep paralysis are ones where I've had out-of-body experiences. These are my favorite kind. They're much more real-like and are a lot less hazy. The imagery is less colorful and less outrageous compared to Dream Initiated LDs; more like real-life rather than Alice in Wonderland.
