Passively controlling what you dream about

I'm talking about non-lucid control of dreams, like "I want to dream about unicorns." No matter how hard I try I cannot get myself to dream about what I want to, or anything related to my day.

For example, I was having a lazy day and watched 3 vampire flicks. That night, I thought about vampires and wanted to have a vampire dream. Didn't.

How come some people can do this and others can't? Is there a way to improve my chances more?

aww I thought this thread was going to be about having dream control in non lucid dreams oh well haha anyways, yeah I can't seem to get this one to work either, what you dream about can be very unpredictable and seem very illogical. when I was a preteen and in my younder teenage years, I always tried telling myself I will have dreams about naked women but they never seemed to occure, then later, like years later when I'm not even trying anymore get the type of dreams I always wanted. So I wouldn't count you out for this appears to be a common thing. Hell you probably even dreamed about some of those things but just don't remember it because they showed up in an earlier dream. the average number of dreams we have I think is 7 to 8 and experienced dream recallers on average only remember up to 3-4 of those so it's possible it worked and you didn't even know it. Also the thought of vampires could also have popped up in a hypnogogic hillucination which usually is fault of our Nonrem dreams so theres also the possability that that thought got bogged down by all the other ones during your sleep transition. I think this technique usually works during REM rebound if I remember correctly, during sleep deprivation, you are most likely able to succefully pre scheme your dream schema. I'm speaking only from a vague memory though so I'm not entirely sure that is correct.

Often times dreams are counter intuitive, meaning that what we really want to dream about will turn out to be the thing we least dream about within weeks or even months. My suggestion is taking off the pressure of that thing that you really want to dream about. Just think how nice it would be if you were to have such a dream but leave it at that. Don't over think it, just relax and if you end up having that dream then feel good about it. Sometimes pushing to have a particular dream is not productive.

I would also suggest that instead of having that one thing you want to dream about, how about having 3? Pick 3 unrelated dream topics of dreams you would like to have, and now your chances of having such a dream will be much better. And perhaps eventually you will dream about all 3 within time... but don't try to force time to give you the dreams you want when you want them. Allow the factor of randomness that exists within our dreams to do it's thing, and work with that instead of working against it.

Sometimes you can't just decide on what you want to dream about in dreams.
