What is your definition for nightmare?

Without bringing all of the technical stuff into it, what is a nightmare to you? What qualifies a dream as being that bad? And what happens to you while you are in a nightmare, if you know?

For me, it's a nightmare if and only if I have a panic attack in my dream. I think I've only had one panic attack in real life, so this basically means I'm scared shitless/super stressed.

I have had bad dreams where I die, or someone I love gets killed, etc, etc, that I wake up after and have trouble sleeping again, but it's never a nightmare.

The most recent nightmare I had really scared my husband, he had never seen me have one before. In the dream I had a panic attack that progressed to a seizure, so irl I was hyperventilating and twitching/shaking. I've never had a seizure before either, it was just in the dream that I did.

I don't think I have nightmares much (if ever). I feel I'd need to be really terrified in the dream. I've had "Oh crap" moments where you feel your heart sink, and I've had dreams put me through simulated pain. I don't consider those nightmares.

I did have quite a few nightmares. I would wake up from them terrified, puting the lights on and trying my hardest not to go to sleep again, because I was freeked out out of my mind.

Most often it was about something really scary. But sometimes the topic should not have been scary, yet it scared the heck out of me anyway.
