When we first go to sleep
Our body enters long NREM Phase (Regeneration which is taking 60 - 80 minutes)
After which there is short around 5 minutes long REM Phase
So if you'd try to lucid dream without firstly WBTB it might take you 60 - 80 minutes to reach transmission to dream (which could fail if something would go wrong)
That kinda thing is called Dream Cycle
Each Dream Cycle has 90 minutes
The later the cycle the longer REM is and shorter NREM
So after 6 - 7 hours of sleep
NREM could take from 5 - 15 minutes
While REM in which lucid dream would probably happen could be quite long
