      Reverse sleep paralysis?

I guess this happens when part of the brain goes to sleep but most of it hasn't. This always happens as I'm trying to fall asleep and preoccupying myself with my own imagination or my memories. When it happens it's just unusually strange things like my imagination is going wild. Couple examples being a flying demon who sheds it's skin every time my phone gets a text, and a man holding a gun to a bag holding the universe with another guy holding a gun to a bag with the guy ready to shoot the universe in it. Oh and gold storage from a game somehow being directly related with my sense self respect. Most recently a couple days ago the abnormal thoughts took a different and scarier path. What happened was I was trying to fall asleep and preoccupying myself with a memory I liked when suddenly the image got replaced by a image of a map from a game I was playing a few minutes ago "this was 10 minutes or less into trying to fall asleep". I tried replacing it with the memory but for some reason I couldn't get the map out of my head no matter how hard I tried to replace it. After a minute of that I started getting scared that I couldn't remember my memories. Then I decided to get up and for a couple minutes I still couldn't get the image of the map out of my head but it finally went away and I could picture my memories again. I know that the frontal lobe becomes pretty much inactive during sleep which is why it's difficult to remember your dreams, did I experience my frontal lobe at least partially shutting off while I was still awake? Are these abnormal imaginary experiences normal when you try to fall asleep?

The state is called hypnogogia, and the visions are referred to as hypnagogic hallucinations. You pretty much nailed it - it's quite simply the state between waking and sleeping. Generally people don't notice it, until they start paying a lot of attention to those in-between states of consciousness.
