      Was I sleepwalking?

Last night I dreamed that I was removing some dead vines that had grown around some water pipes. The vines had thorns or prickles, and these penetrated the gloves I was wearing and hurt my hands. So I woke up.

Whenever I closed my eyes and tried to get back to sleep, the vines - and prickles - reappeared. So I got up and went downstairs, feeling groggy (it was 4:30am) and got a drink of juice. But the dream still re-started whenever I closed my eyes. This was unpleasant: the dream had a bad vibe and the prickles were hurting my fingers.

So to wake myself up a bit more, I turned on the computer and started to read the news. Eventually I felt more awake and alert, and the dream went away, so I could close my eyes without seeing it. At that point I went back to bed and managed to fall asleep without the dream recurring.

This morning there was an empty juice carton in the kitchen and my computer was still on, so that stuff was not part of the dream.

I'm wondering: did I wake up when I thought I did, or was I sleepwalking, and only woke up when the dream finally stopped happening whenever I closed my eyes?

It seems to me that, despite being up and aware (assuming you were not insanely groggy), your body was still asleep. I guess even while being having a bit of consciousness, your mind and body was still calm enough to make it believe it was still sleeping, thus the dream reappearing when you closed your eyes. When you became more aware, the dream stopped.

I think you were just experiencing hallucinations whenever you closed your eyes. So, yeah, you were sleepwalking.

Or perhaps, what you were experiencing was a dream and your mind stopped paralyzing the body, causing you to act out the dream, then when you read the news that ended the dream, but you just didn't notice any difference because you were acting out your dream.
