Being friends and lovers with dream characters

So I'd love it if you (the reader ) had some thoughts on this and would share them with me

This applies to both lucid and non-lucid dreams and the big grey area in between.

A friendship or romantic relationship will usually feel far more real if the dream character is not someone from waking life but a unique person. I don't know how lucidity (clear-headed and clearly aware of the dream) affects this, because this is a a recent thing and I rarely have dreams where I'm clearly aware and my lucid dreams are 5-10 minutes so I don't know about that yet. But it always feels good when I wake up from it. It also feels good when I am in the dream, even though I know they're not really like people from waking life, they're dream characters and they seem to know this (perhaps because I think they'll know, so that makes them appear like they know), but it's pleasant regardless. Just cuddling or doing something random, talking, whatever.

Beside feeling good, it's also interesting you know.. For the same reason I'm curious about how and why we experience music the way we do or why we dream in the first place. How elaborate and seemingly-real dream characters can get.

      Have a nice day!

My personal experience with unique dream characters (or reoccurring people that only exist in my dreams) is a guy named Isaac. Isaac is more of a dream guide and pretty much only shows up when I call for him. I still find it amazing that he has his own personality, unlike anyone that I know or have met. He is a pretty chill guy most of the time unless he is trying to troll me, but he's alright. His appearance usually remains the same each time I see him. He might change clothes around, but he pretty much wears mostly white. Sometimes when I'm talking to him, I forget that he actually a creation of my imagination, but he always seems to remind me that we are the same person which is something I find interesting.

Talking to him is always great because I can pretty much talk about anything and its fine. I think one of the reasons why we feel good after having dreams with these characters is that we know we are always safe with them and they understand our problems because they are us. It's nice to have someone reassure you that everything is gonna be alright. It's kinda like having a best friend, but it's different at the same time because there is a deeper connection going on.

That's pretty much what I have to say about friendships with dream characters. I hope I was able to shed my experience on the topic for ya.

      See ya later Stromboli.

First of all, Stromboli is a volcanic island I assume that it also means something else, since you said it after "See ya later"

Yours is a bit different though, I've never had recurring dream characters, other than people in real life but thats a different case. My dream-only characters never came back. But yeah sometimes there is that situation where it's like they know me and understand me, because we're the same mind. Very strange. It takes talking to yourself to a completely different level

I'm looking forward to spending time with these recurring elaborate dream characters, I really want to ask a bunch of questions and investigate them. Try and find something to reveal their true shallow nature, that they're not like actual people, not because I want them to seem fake, but because it's more interesting to be critical. I'd be surprised if they will never appear shallow or fake, which would be very exciting. As if there wasn't enough cool stuff to do in lucid dreams with all the flying, shapeshifting, teleporting, fighting, athletic abilities, telekenesis, sorcering.

So do you also have dream characters who are less interesting but still unique and feel like real people and who only appear in one dream?

The closest I've ever been to a dream character was in a dream that was mostly non lucid and vaguely lucid, it was a girl and we were in love and it was a 15-20 minute or so dream. I don't remember what we talked about (we didn't talk much) and it was nothing compared to what some experienced lucid dreamers talk about when talking about recurring dream characters.

ps: it's also a character from Pinocchio I see. Also, I see that you have just joined this website yesterday or 2 days ago (depending on timezone), cool

Yup, I am new to this website, however I've been in the lucid dreaming game for a lot longer, but this website is still a pretty nice place. The Stromboli I was referring to is the Italian meat and cheese filled turnover. I tend to call people Stromboli for some reason, its a problem.

Anyways, to answer your question, I do also have dreams with non-occurring dream characters. A good example is actually a dream I had last night where I was helping this girl who was called "The Moon Lady". She was pretty nice and I liked helping her out as she was fun to be around. However after helping her out, the sky turned a gray color and I knew that she had something to do with it. I asked her "What are you planning?" and she replied with "Don't worry about it, I got this all under control" and she hugged me. I knew she had some sort of hidden agenda, but I never ended figuring out what it was.

I find it intriguing that dream characters can have their own agendas and own motivations. It's pretty cool how complex a dream character can be. Of course, some of them can be shallow and have flat personalities, but occasionally you can run into some pretty interesting characters. Looking back in my dream journal, I'm finding many examples of unique dream characters who have only showed up one time in dreams. All of them seemed like they could be real people and they acted like regular people. One of things I want to try in a lucid dream is to try to create a reoccurring dream character and have them do their own thing.

But, yeah. Talking to dream characters is always an enjoy experience when they don't spit nonsense at you. Its like talking to a real person(except it's all in your head).

Hey Ginsan and SnowStrider Yes I too find it really interesting - the chats I have had with some DC's since Lucid dreaming I have sincerely enjoyed...it feels cool, as if I am exploring very new unchartered territory ( for me )Yes, the convos in nld's are sometimes pretty way out with curveballs and all ...but as we all know it simply adds another dimension with interactions in Lucids!

I have only just started this so I am at the beginning of my subject - but so far a few DC'S have stood out as much smarter and very much in the know when it comes to anything I ask - not phased and giving clear answers as if they totally are thinking for themselves and I do believe friendships of a sort are blooming ✨

      Have a nice day guys

I don't ever seem to actually talk to my dream characters. It's more like we automatically understand each other and simply don't need words to communicate, alomost like telepathy. Anyway, the only reoccuring dc I have is my dream guide. We have quite an enjoyable sexual relationship. No romance, though. It would feel too much like having a relationship with myself.

With the exception of her, everyone I've met tends to be quite one note and often only exists for a single dream. When lucid, I tend to focus more on myself and the spectacle of world, than its inhabitants, so, there's probably not much else to say.

Why is that? Doesn't she feel like another person? Would it be like having an imaginary friend? My imaginary friendship felt kind of like I was having a relationship with myself. It was just a few days btw.

She feels real at first, but then I wake up and I know that not only is she not real, but she's just a part of myself. Doesn't feel meaningful enough to justify a relationship, since, in my mind, a relationship must be meaningful to deserve its name. I don't judge anyone who does pursue a relationship with a dc. Its just not for me.

I see, so it's not because of how real she seems/acts/feels, but because of reasoning. I'm glad.

Splodeymissile, perhaps you should see it as being important as it gives you a chance to have a good relationship with yourself, to see it as an opportunity to better understand you. What, actually, could be more important?

Its definitely important. But I thought we were on about romantic relationships. In terms of discovering myself, she still would probably only represent part of the whole and it would perhaps be more useful to consider the totality of my being, rather than a single element, such as, through meditation or consulting the subconscious directly. That said, if she represents the subconcious, my shadow self or is at least something more than a dc I arbitrarily attached importance to, then you're probably right and a relationship of a sort (still not romantic) would be meaningful. I'll have to give it more consideration the next time I'm lucid.
