      Do animals dream?

I was wondering if animals dream. Do any of you know?

I think they might because I heard that animals brains create DMT too, which might be the cause of dreaming.

I think so... My dog sleep-barks... so... I guess he's dreaming of other dogs or something.

If I remember correctly, all mammals dream. Birds, reptiles, fish etc. have periods of rest or sleep, without the dream stages. Obviously cats and dogs dream.

I was wondering if anybody has seen any other of their pets dreaming? Like horses, gerbils, etc. any other mammals? I've had other pets that cats and dogs but I can't remember noticing that they were dreaming.

Oh yeah. My dog dreams all the time when he sleeps. He shows all the signs of him being in REM sleep. He grunts, twitches, the usual.

Wow thats cool! I have 2 birds, but I never see them sleeping, so I wouldn't notice that stuff. The second I step into the room they're in they're awake.

Maybe you could set up a video camera in their cages to catch them when they're sleeping....

Lol, one of my birds would eat the camera. She eats everything, and never stops eating! And she is still really, really, skinny!

Most animals that actually sleep, probably dream.

For example, in my dog's sleep, he will constantly lick the basket he's in. ( You can imagine what he's dreaming about. )

The funny thing is you can pat then without them waking up...

As opposed to other times where the dog is resting, and one touch will wake it up.

Yeah my cat's face twitches all funny when he's asleep, and his paws will move in a running motion. It's really fun to tug on his whiskers or something and mess with his dreams.

Yep, animals experience REM just like people and therefore they dream. Obviously no one knows what animals specifically dream about, but I've seen my cats in REM before and know they must be experiencing some imagery of some kind.

I can tell what my dogs are dreaming about--their paws are twitching, their nose is twitching--they're doing their favorite thing: taking a walk and chasing squirrels.

I can definately say dogs do. Mine will bark softly, wag his tail and his paws go nuts. We recorded a little bit of audio on our cell phone once when he was sleeping. Everytime we play it back, he tries to eat the phone. I can tell when he has nightmares, he follows me everywhere. I can't even take a shower alone, he has to lay on the rug until I turn the water off. If the door is closed, he'll whine at the door until I let him in. It doesn't happen very often, so I'm guessing it's nightmares that make him so clingy. I'm not sure about my cats though. Everytime I look at them while asleep, they open their eyes.

I've seen my dog actually sleepwalk. She got up, walked into a wall and fell back down, it was one of the funniest things that I've ever seen her do. I'll bet my cats dream too, why else would they sleep so much? I'm sure Garfield lucid dreams.

Well humans dream so the answer is yes.

If you mean non-human animals, then I'd say yes because my dog twitches in her sleep and has REM.

I'm certain that my dog dreams. Often I see him lying there on his doggy bed, bark-whimpering in his sleep and the funniest thing ever is seeing his legs start pumping as he runs in his dreams.. so adorable..

Hehehe I'd love to see what my cats dream about...

"Hey prince, I just had the awesomest dream ever"

      "What?"

"I was eating food, and then when I was done, I ate more food."

"Woah, your dreams are off the hook."

My dogs run in their sleep.

      They also make whining noises.

My cats run in their sleep too, one of them even snarls, I think once I saw my friend's hamster move it's leg around in it's sleep but it was dark so I'm not really sure
