      Tossing and turning

Over the past couple of nights I have been tossing and turning all night, feeling as if I was awake all night. i have a few questions:
Does anyone have any recommendation on how to avoid this sort of night or have peaceful sleep after the tossing has started?
Also, I was thinking that maybe I dreamt most of the tossing and turning because in the morning I felt as if I had slept a full night, so is it possible these are just long dreams of being awake at night that we get? If so, wouldn't they be a good conveyance to a lucid-i.e if you are tossing and turning, do an RC. has anyone ever become lucid this way?

For tossing and turning, try a couple things:

      1) Find out if you're thinking about something. Is your mind quiet or are you worrying about something. Stress will keep you awake, and the longer you are awake, the more restless you become.

      2) Try sleeping in a different place. Sofa or couch in the living room, or on the floor in a sleeping bag or thick comforter. It's possible you're just trying to sleep in an uncomfortable bed.

I guess I have been stressed about something...stupid reasons actually, but personal ones
I need to get a grip. I'm still most curious about whether I really was awake or asleep and if anyone's achieved a lucid from a tossing turning dream...

i have had that the last couple of nights as well, and the best way i always try and get to sleep every night is

      1. Let all thoughts that come into your mind, flow through like a river or stream. Dont try and block them out just pretty much let them go in one ear and out the other.

      2. One of Castana's Techniques

See yourself as a stream, a long flowing river let the river run down the stream nice and slow, feel the rocks beneth your feet as you flow over them,
see the stream ending into a waterfall, then as the waterfall approches, only see yourself as a single drop of the water slowing going down the waterfall then into the water beneth you then flow to the top slowly, as you rise to the top of the water you have fallen into, see the sun reflecting on the water and soaking up the esence of all the water into the sky, see yourself as evaparated air flowing into the sky above then into a cloud.
See and feel yourself as that soft, flowing, gentle cloud, then see the sky raining back down to earth into the same river you started from.

there are many more techniques to use for falling to sleep, like just going through and relaxing your body slowing, part to part.

I think the main part to think about, is we need to see ourself's going into the dream, we need to have the intent to dream and be aware of our physical and energy bodies leaving each other.

      hope this helps my friend.

I usually have a glass of water, put a DVD on (usually with commentry cos i'm not really intending to stay up and watch the whole film) and I eventually doze off. I've gave up trying to sleep when I know it's not happening, and as mentioned, it could be because something is on your mind. Putting a DVD on or listening to the radio may take your mind off it, allowing you to doze of if you really are tired.

ahhhh, it doesn't mean the reason is stupid. If what ever it is, causes you to feel stressed then it is what it is.
The best way to fix something is action. I do not know your personal issue, but if it can be addressed, then it may alleviate some of your stress.

Sometimes our bodies are just not physically tired, This can can conflict with the mind. It can work the other way too.

If my body is accustomed to physical exertion, through work or recreational sports, then I go through a period that I sit around all day, I can't get to sleep for the life of me.
To the opposite, if it ever applied to me - hypothetically you can work your mind very rigorously and be mentally exhausted.

Something else to consider is our circadian clock
When you live in an area that the seasons can change drastically and the amount of day light fluctuates, can also play a role in our sleeping habits.
Also, I was thinking that maybe I dreamt most of the tossing and turning because in the morning I felt as if I had slept a full night, so is it possible these are just long dreams of being awake at night that we get? Any time is a good time for a reality check.
I have had dreams that I have awaken into a dream, but it is evident that I am in a dream. Most dream scenes are surreal and unstable. There are occasions that our dreams are almost inseparable from our waking lives. I went through a phase of this after practicing lucid dreams for quite some time.
It seems unlikely that you were dreaming the entire episode. But it is also odd that it seems this vague to you. Maybe it was a combination of both. Your tossing and turning while awake, led you to also dream about your frustrations when you finally fell asleep.

      Good luck.

      Hey there,

Personally, when it happens, I grab myself a book. Something far away from all the troubles and issues of my daily life. Some sci-fi or fantasy story. And just read quietly for half an hour or so. That usually does the trick for me.

Like others already mentioned though, if you have issues on your mind that you can't let go off, or are feeling stressed out, it can be difficult to get to sleep regardless. For this I recommend simply making a little 'to do tomorrow' note. Write down the issue, put it in a place so that you'll remember it when you wake up the next day, and then go to sleep safe in the knowledge that you can 'let it go' without worrying that you'll forget about it the next day.

I can never fall asleep unless I read for some time, which varies depending on how tired I am, beforehand in bed. I love to read in general but this is a habit i guess i picked up from my mom, she reads every night in bed also.

I'd say reading helps a huge amount, so long as the book isn't too thrilling.
