1. You don't have a normal sleep schedule. You have severe or mild insomnia which causes you to sleep for dramatically different hours at different times each night.

2. You drink alcohol at some point during the night, probably closer to bedtime, causing a severe disturbance in sleep quality and REM. Although this won't always mess with recall (except if used over a period of time), however it will at least give you some pretty crazy dreams that night.

3. And the killer....weed. I know I have a problem with this, and it is probably one of the main reasons for my dryspell. If you smoke(or otherwise consume) it throughout the day, or especially closer to bedtime, it will annihilate your dream recall. If you have ever been extremely high off of it, you know that you have trouble remembering things from 10 minutes earlier, so of course it will severely affect your dream recall. Prolonged use of it also can probably leave an impression on your dreams for a while, but not for too long.

Anyway, one way to combat it is really to spend some time reading about dreams and posting on forums like this one, it gets your mind back on that train of thought, and it has certainly helped me a lot with recall. There are also many foods that will help greatly with dream recall (dark chocolate before bed, doesn't have to be a whole lot, but at least one serving of it).

Hope this helps in any way, there are probably many more reasons for diminishing recall that I have not listed, these are all just personal ones.
Thanks every one i really appreciate the responses.
1)yeah i have relatively severe insomnia. I've gone weeks with only like 2 or 3 hours of sleep every other night before. normally i can get a decent nights sleep of 4 to 6 hours though I don't always sleep through. I also have hypersomnia, a distinct in ability to awake, when I do have deep sleeps and sleep around 12-14 hours
2)I don't drink to much as I'm a minor only occasionally at parties w/ my gf.
3)I've done weed a couple of times but I've been careful not to make it a habit

Thanks for all the advise I'll definitely try the chocolate thing and I'll try starting a dream journal as everyone seems to say that helps. Thanks everyone I'll let you all know about the wonderful lucid dreams I've been having thanks to you guys after I get in a routine
