      Death?

Someone told me you can die from not sleeping about a week. I don't have insomnia but sometimes I don't feel like sleeping, id rather play video games, or back when I did other stuff ideas constantly came to me, and I think the lack of sleep was worth it, but I do not see how not sleeping can kill you.

I mean I am not the healthiest person sleeping only a few hours a night, I rest my eyes most the time im in school and I just do not see the point in sleeping. I used to dream and could control it and be aware of my dream and do what I wanted, but I find no benifit to sleeping so I do it as little as possible.

Well, after saying that I was wondering how long you can go without sleeping before something...bad happens. I went days without sleeping before cuz I had stuff I had to do and was just started to wonder...how long can you go for?

I've read several articles about this...alot of them are quite inconclusive.

Try going a Google search about it. Or I'm sure there is alot of stuff about this on the forum. Try searching the forum Good luck

I've heard of people on drugs like Methamphetamine who have stayed up for at least that long and survived. I wonder if the drug combats the effects of not having any sleep at all, or if people can just take it.

I think eventually your mind gets so much fatigue that reality starts warping or whatnot. Sounds fun! ... until of course your mind dies.

What's the world record for staying awake nonstop now? I thought that it was only 3 or 4 days... Staying awake for a week might cause other effect such as a stroke or heart attack or shut down of some major organ (or toxin overload from all the drugs one would have to use to stay awake that long), but I don't think you would die simply from fatigue or lack of sleep...

11 days. After 3-4 you start halluncinating. After 21 days, test mice in the lab died....so I wouldn't want to go for that record. There is a point when body temperature drops below a certain point, and after that, even if it started sleeping again, the mouse would die.

Rumour has it that the Nazis experiments on humans during WWII and they lasted about 4 weeks before death.

      Re: Death?

I don't think death is possible from lack of sleep alone. Sleep deprivation (used as a form of torture all over the world) will eventually cause other problems: mood swings, depression, decreased apetitite, reduced immune response, paranoia, suicidal tendancies. But it would take a long time, like months.

I heard it's only three weeks or less w/o sleep before you die, but I can't remember where I heard it so I don't know if it's true.

Well normally you will pass out if you get tired enough. If you some how make it past that, you start to go nuts. Then if you keep going sooner or later you will die. I am not sure if that can even really happen, unless your taking drugs or something to keep you awake. You brain does need some rest though, and of course if it stops working your dead.

Does this mean I should go to bed more often. I sometimes stay up 2-3 days at a time. Not excessively, but sometimes me and my friends throw crazy parties.

If you start seeing things yea. Its easy to tell if your not getting enough sleep. If you find yourself forgetting a lot or you cant focus, you need sleep.

Well whether you think it's possible or not, I assure you it is. I see your point, but its the same as saying \"a bullet can't kill you, its only the massive blood loss and organ failure that does it.\"

You should read a book called Sleep Theives. It's a good, very informative read. With plenty of info on various sleep related studies that have been conducted.

my record of sleep deprevation was a little over 72 hours.. I was good for the first 24, felt a little tired at the end, but kept goin. At about 30 hours, i feel remarkably creative.. things would just flow into my mind.. this lasted for awile. At about 48-50, i started to act a little emotional at times, and do stupid things.. at around 60, i began to start losing sanity... at around 70 hours, i pretty much lost it and had a conversation with a chair about my life. The chair eventually told me, that If i continued doing things the way I did, i would end up like him... he then told me to goto sleep, which i promptly did. Yeah, i hallucinated pretty bad.. and had an almost complete emotional breakdown towards the end. It was.. interesting, and btw.. yeah, i did it with NO CAFFIENE.

I think that chances are you WILL die from sleep deprivation from doing something stupid.. like driving off a cliff, trying to fly, running down the street yelling "I'M THE BISHOP" (which i have heard a case of one of my friends knowing someone who did that on sleep dep).

TheUnknown it shocked me to read your post.....im glad someone else has gone through the same feelings, what you said totally recounts my entire experience almost word for word- maybe when i have time i will re-count the entire experience. Its cool you have a comical tone from describing it . I couldnt sleep for about 5 days and lost my sanity! (lol) I was deluded to the point that i thought i was in a dream, i almost died casue i didnt think i was real, i just did things that were crazy, but its hard for me to recount my experience due to fear. I walked into the sea and communicated with the Full Moon, i went deep into the Ocean and just started Swimming, but i decided to come back....(lol)
