Serpico, I started having WILDs accidently. I started using what I thought was a counting method to help me get back to sleep after being up for a while in the early morning. I mistakenly thought it was a technique to help me sleep but actually it was a WILD method.
I had a WILD the first time I tried it and the method has worked many times since then. WILDS seem to be easier than MILDs/DILDs for me now.
FYI, I'm almost always congested and usually breathe through my mouth in bed so I wouldn't be concerned about that... I keep a bottle of water within reach in case my mouth gets too dry. I'm always on my side as well, either one....I can't sleep on my back easily.
BTW, most of my WILDs have been "Out of Body Experiences". If you want to induce a WILD, be sure to read up on people's experiences if you haven't already. WILD's can be unsettling at first if you don't know what to expect. As you might know already, inducing a WILD can involve sleep paralysis, vibrations, weird sounds, and other strange events. Your first WILD might also be an "OBE" which can be VERY unsettling if you aren't expecting one. I'm not trying to scare you since I love "OBE's" and welcome them...It's an outrageous (as in "cool") experience....I think most people feel the same....just be aware.
WILDs take anywhere from 30 to 90 minutes to happen in my experience. I don't experience any of the things people talk about such as sleep paralysis, vibrations, sounds, etc. The only thing that happens to me is very vivid Hypnagogic Imagery that starts when I start counting: "1, I'm dreaming, 2, I'm dreaming, 3, I'm dreaming...etc. It seems to increase in intensity to a peak or threshold at which point, I'm either lying in bed and lucid, or I'm pretty much awake and I have to try again. I always get a fantastic adrenaline rush when I become lucid so I know when it has happened, but not how. I wish I could tell you how I become lucid at that threshold but it doesn't seem to be consistent. This counting method is described in "Exploring the World of Lucid Dreaming" by Stephen La Berge, a book that you should own if you don't have it yet.
The techniques for MILD and DILD (dream induced lucid dream) are pretty clear and not as vague as WILD in my opinion. Since you are just starting out, you might consider staying with MILDs/DILDs until you have a few LD's... the experience gained might help you WILD more easily.
Sorry, didn't mean to go on...I just get carried away most times....Hope this was helpful to you.
