Thread: Speech About Lucidity

The basics of it, how it can happen (induction techniques/RCs/&c), when it happens, some experiences, what it actually is. The general stuff, but not too much detail. Also make it sound interesting, most people could care less about LDing.

Thank your for your suggestions, but I disagree with you that people don't care about LDing. The first time I heard about lucid dreaming, I was so intrigued I completely immersed myself in the study of dreams, sleep, lucidity, consciousness, etc. For weeks on end, I researched in my spare time. My main goal in this is to get others interested too.

Like I said, that's hard to do. Go and try to talk to anyone about dreams and your effort will most likely shrugged off. Try to talk about lucid dreams and that rises to almost certain, especially if you keep bugging them about it. Try it if you don't believe me. It works better if they find it on their own, that way it's up to their imagination the possibilities that can occur with lucid dreams.

There is a lot of skeptical people too, try to talk about the scientific aspect of lucid dreaming and the applications of it helping to deal with nightmares, sleep paralysis etc.
And obviously talk about the possibilities of lucid dreaming.

I complete agree with you snow.

I tried to tell and explain LD'ing to one of my best friends. He said it was dumb, time consuming and that he didn't like "unreal" experiences. Most people just don't find it interesting like we do.

You got even farther than I did. I couldn't even get farther than one sentence before being cut off. I asked "Are you dreaming? and everybody didn't give a damn as to whether or not they were.

Ha ha I have had a lot of success telling people about it actually. I've gotten at least 2 of my friends pretty interested in it. One friend thought I was doing something evil though

Can you elaborate on this? I understand telling them about sleep paralysis and REM attonia, but how does lucid dreaming help people that suffer from SP?

And when people hear me rant about dreams, like today I gave a lesson to the teacher about the difference between night terrors and nightmares, they seem pretty interested... A few of my friends thought it was cool, but none chose to pursue it. I will need to say why people should do it I guess, even though it seems pretty obvious to me. One of my friends considers it a dark practice. :/

He's probably the religious pessimist of your friends. Somebody ALWAYS has to think it's bad.

Anyway, for your actual question. It can help people that suffer from SP because they will know what it is and how they can take advantage of it.

We started talking about lucid dreaming after she came to me about a strange dream she had in which she was, "floating and looking down and viewing her body as it lie sleeping." Sounded an awful lot like astral projection to me...

Anyways. My speech is layed out as follows:

-Introduction: I will probably describe a lucid dream, the possibilities, attempt to intrigue them.
-Body: Mention Dr. LaBerge
Talk about benefits of lucid dreaming--overcoming nightmares, SP (as mentioned above), spiritual experience, more "awake" time especially
for terminal cancer patients, etc.
History of lucid dreaming
Techniques
Media, such as books, and movies like Waking Life, The Science of Sleep, and Paprika.
-Conclusion: I'm sure I'll end this by questioning their current reality. How do they know they're not the ones dreaming right now?

Have you read Exploring the world of lucid dreaming by Dr. LaBerge? Because that has a lot to do with the benefits of it. Also if you start with something catching like a lucid experience you had. For example you could say "Last week I was flying around battling a huge monster... how did I do this you may ask? Well I had something called a lucid dream" or something like that.

That is a good idea! I agree to that!

I would include: How and when it occurs (REM sleep, induction techniques.) The uses of lucid dreaming (problem solving, visiting dead loved ones, more understanding of yourself, fun, total freedom, fighting off nightmares.) Maybe some background and history on lucid dreaming. Defiantly recommend Exploring the World of Lucid Dreaming for more information in your speech.

when i tell people about lucid dreaming i got a mixed response: i got 1 friend interested and now he is a LDer, 3 friends think me and him are weird and/or we are making shit up, the rest couldn't care less. My mum thinks i am been evil, my brother thinks it is fine, my dad thinks its a hoax (he even went as far as saying this site is a load of bullshit) and my sister couldn't care less

EWOLD should be your top source of information.

The most comon connection with dreams will probably still be Inception. Discuss that, what the similarities and differences are between it and how dreams actually work.

As supernova said discuss Inception as cool as the movie was explain to them how lucid dreaming is way more epic. On a side note only one of my friends who I told about LDing actually does it and he is a natural he had them but never payed any real attention to them now hes killing zombies and all kinds of other cool stuff everyone else is like "Not dreams again cant we talk about something else?"

i wrote a speech about lucid dreaming in high school if you'd like to see it to get some ideas it might be a little cheesy, i haven't read it in awhile but everyone liked it

Ask if anyone has had a lucid dream, because if anyone has, then you have support for your case.

This. While Inception probably shouldn't be a large part of your speech, you should at least mention it.

This also. You're much more likely to get other people interested in LDing if your speech is exciting.
