Bare in mind that he "wakes" up for 1 whole minute before trying to sleep again and so undoubtedly opens his eyes at least once. The notion of a DEILD is very unlikely because the "junctions" of awareness between dreams probably don't last that long.

I presumed it was a V.I.L.D because he described imagining his dream surroundings before entering the dream.

DEILD's alternative name is Dream Chaining. I.E. One Lucid after the next. It is not constricted to going from a regular to a Lucid. In fact, it makes the whole process quite a lot easier if you ARE Lucid before doing a DEILD, because there is an increased chance of being aware of the dream exit.
