Listening to music before going to sleep

My question is this: Do any of you listen to music as you are dropping off to sleep, and do any of you find it has a bearing on your dreams, either in content or lucidity?
Also, does it matter what you listen to? does it have to be relaxing, or can it be anything you like?

I often listen to music before bed, though I haven't recently, but it never seemed to have an effect on my dreams. I used the music to reply visualizations in my mind, in hopes that the images might appear in my dreams but it didn't work.

That's just been my experience with it. It can calm you down if you are worked-up, though. I hate going to bed in a bad mood and it's harder for me to get to sleep if I do, so music helps in that respect.

It affects some of dreams in the past, (when I fall asleep with the radio on) but now it only stops me from sleeping.

I fall asleep to music as well, typically, Nobuo Uematsu's works. I never really noticed that it makes an impact on my dreams, other than I seem to fall to sleep faster.

i can't get to sleep with music playing, unless i'm totally exhausted, though it does help relax me. i've never noticed any effects of my choice of pre-sleep music on my dreams either.

I find if i can hear a radio playing somewhere, with songs that have lyrics, i find myself awake and listening to the song.
If i'm going to listen to music before going to sleep, it has to be of the ambient variety...
I don't find it makes a difference to my dreams, but it sometimes helps me fall asleep faster, and i might sleep better.

May i suggest a cool album to listen to before bed? Radiohead's "KID A".

It helps me to gain a high level of hypongogic (sp) imagery before sleep, with the headphones on it really does send you to a "world of your own".

I love listening to music before falling asleep, the greatest feeling in the world! (esp if its a good album). Ive not noticed any effects the music has on dreaming, but ive never thought about it before....(cool idea to think about).

here's another idea for you: have you ever played a cd (without headphones) in the dark?
      very atmospheric...or it can be...
i've done this...and it's very enjoyable...i didn't do it for sleeping, just for the sensation.

I can not go to sleep at all when I'm listening to music, I turn the stereo on and put in a cd, and stays up for like more 40 minutes listening to it..

Ive listened to a wide variety of music before I go to bed,

And none of it has had any noticible effect on my dreams

What I listen to before I go to sleep doesn't affect my dreams from what I can remember.

One time, I had a dream in which I heard a Cradle of Filth song playing the whole time. I was convinced that I was wearing headphones... (But I hadn't listened to the song before I went to sleep)

I had a really fascinating experience when listening to music while sleeping, once.

I was listening Tool's Lateralus - know the song by heart. In my dream I could hear the music but didnt think anything of it.

I heard the end of of the song "reflection" perfectly with detailed instruments exactly how the song went. When I awoke - the song was just getting to the part I just listened to in my dream.

The interesting part was that the music was utterly perfect and real, even though in reality, It had not reached that part of the song yet.

I find that I can only listen to music while sleeping if it is a steady and constant flow. If there are spaces between songs or parts where the music stops and then starts again it almost always wakes me up.

I once made a tape loop of a Mantra I wanted to try out -- a mantra for Prosperity (Aum eim rheem shreem kamala vasani yay swaha). I played it while I slept thinking that it might influence my dreams. And it did, in a strange way. In a Lucid Dream I heart that Mantra being chanted, in my voice, at a distance away. I flew to it -- a quite beautiful locale -- a villiage on stilts in the middle of what looked like an Alpine Lake. I finally traced the Chanting Mantra to a small bird cage filled with sparrow. The little birds in a cage were chanting for Prosperity. Hmmmmm. Was this to tell me that material possessions are a bondage?

hey, that's really interesting! And about the material possessions, i'm not keen on them...my mum loves ornaments, and knick knacks, and 'things' as i call them....'dust gatherers.'
      Whereas i prefer a more natural approach...houseplants!
i get a lot more from those, satisfaction that i have grown and looked after something.

Actually what your Mum is doing may be quite spiritually useful. Where idolatry is wrong --supposing that Stone or Metal Images are Spiritual Entities in themselves -- the keeping of Images has always been done, except in Iconoclastic Societies which are almost without exception Barbarian and Boneheaded. What these Knicknacks do is provide
Gateways into the Astral Words for Resonante Spirits which they closely resemble. So a setup of delightful little Knicknacks makes for a milieu that has a pleasant astral aura.

I surround myself with little statuettes and paintings of the various Apparitions of Our Lady .

      Plants are good to.

Oh, and I keep those cats, whom, if I continue to treat them well so that they remain content, must do their part to keep the Astral Milieu from ever growing too dark.

I generally listen to about an hour of music before I go to sleep, usually ethnic (Celtic, Indian, Tibbetan, Gregorian, et cetera) or from a movie soundtrack (reburned so that only the more tranquil songs are playing). During this time, I sort through my mind, which helps relieve the frequency of reliving whatever I saw the previous day in my dream. I find the music really helps me focus my thoughts.

However, while I am asleep, I keep an air filter on. My parents install'd it because I have A.D.D. and apparently white noise helps bring calm and focus to such people. It almost certainly helps bring calm and focus to my dreams, though I can't say why.
It is important that we do not judge these few unbiased moments of our lives, but take them as they are. There is no nightmare for the lucid dreamer, nor no shadows on the mind.

By the way, I keep statuettes of Shiva Nataraja, the Buddha, a hand-carved wooden cross, and several rune-stones around me when I meditate.

when you say 'around' you, do you mean as in a circle, and you sit in the middle?
can i just go to my favourite place (it's outdoors) sit down on the ground, close my eyes, and meditate that way? listening to the wind and the birds?

Man oh man, I CANNOT sleep with any form of music. If I do, I focus all my attention on it. You'll be able to hear me B*tching in my other thread, I think it's titled "I'm screwed" Or something[/quote]
