You got it perfect first time Jrels
WBTB is simply a technique that makes it easier to become conscious in the dream, since the dream occurs very soon after nodding off again. Consciousness is fresh in the mind, and lucid dreaming realisation becomes easier.
You can combine it with WILD, or MILD, or just use it as a boost for DILD techniques (dream signs + reality checks)
I tend to do the latter
[EDIT]
BTW, the trick to a good WBTB is to get the timing right. It varies a little from person to person, but generally staying awake for about 15 or 20 minutes has been shown to be optimal. If you can't get back to sleep after that, then reduce. If you pass out completely, then lengthen the time
It's also possible to play around with the activity you do in that time. Eg. reading, quick PC game, etc. Just don't get too wrapped up in it and stay up too long.
My problem is - who the hell wants to get up for 20 minutes after 5 or 6 hours sleep
It's not a very convenient boost for lucid dreams that's for sure. But it works well.
