What it sounds like you want to do is a called a DEILD (Dream Exit Initiated Lucid Dream). If you stay still right when you wake up, you will have a good chance to pull it off. Sadly this means you can't write in your dream journal after waking up. So unfortunately you will probably have to choose between the two.

I heard that you should be able to recall at around 10 dreams a week before you attempt a DEILD. I would suggest writing in your dream journal instead if you feel like you have a low level of recall. If you think you're ready or just really really want to, then I'd suggest skipping the journal until morning and try to DEILD.

I'm not an expert on DEILDs and WILDs, but I hope this helps.

It's all up to you really, but you want a good recall when you're starting out, if you haven't then I suggest you focus on that for now. You don't have to set an alarm every hour but whenever you wake up during the night you should write down anything you can recall. If your recall is above 2-3 dreams per night then it's good enough in my opinion and you can try DEILD'ing Or do them both, take one night each. Good luck!
