Best reality check when waking up?

What RCs do you use when you just wake up?

I recently suffered an annoying false awakening. I would have done a reality check but I usually just trace back my steps through the day (finger-through-palm doesn't work well for me), but when waking up I've got no steps to trace back.

Any ideas?

Pinch your nose, if you can breathe through it your in a dream. Quite reliable, can be used in complete darkness also. Finger through palm stopped working for me too.

You could look at a body of text and see if it changes in any way.

Digital clocks. Digital Clocks. And more digital clocks. When I was hardcore LDing, I had 2 in my room, visible from any angle. They paid off in some epic quality false awakenings turned LDs.

Seriously, nothing else comes even close to the reliability of a digital clock RC. I've tried finger through palm and breathing through the nose, but they do not produce the same "jolt of awareness" that you feel as you are looking at a changing clock. "WTF is going on with this clock?" .
