Sounds to me, Brock, like you were indeed dreaming that your were lucid. This can certainly happen, since your dreaming mind always wants to make good on your expectations -- it happens to me all the time. It's also not a bad thing, as it shows that you're heading in the right direction; you just need to work at getting your waking awareness into the equation.
One way this is done is by working harder on your waking-life exercises, especially state testing (aka Reality Checks), questioning the "odd," and carefully setting intention before sleep. Oh, and Avalanche is absolutely right: if you want to be serious about LD'ing, you'd best get serious about keeping that dream journal...
