Most people dont realise they are dreaming because of sign, it just happens suddenly. The technique you use (WILD) can be very difficult, even more so for beginners. I recommend DILD (getting lucid during the dream). The key to it is to be more aware in waking life and asking yourself whether you are dreaming throughout the day, Don't just make it a routine-thing though. Really consider the possibilty of being in a dream already. A dream can be as realistic as (it can even be more realistic than) waking life.
