      The "Falling" Dream

I know that everyone here has at least one time or another had the very short falling dream. You just go to sleep, and then all of the sudden you're falling through colors or falling to the ground and SMACK, you jump and wake up.

My question is, what exactly are these things?

      Thanks.

The closest thing to that is 'almost' falling alseep, and feeling as though I'm falling. I've fallen off my bed by being startled.

I've had one of those. It feels like your falling, then you wake up a second before you hit the ground in real life (having fallen off the bed). Whoosh. Huh? BANG!. Just like that. It either means that your just about asleep and your conscious is somehow tricked into believing that the blackness of your eyelids is an endless pit, or that you are actually falling off the bed. That's what I believe anyway.

They are called something like a hypnogic jerk or rather.

One theory is that, your heart rate and blood pressure become so low that your brain begins to think that you are dead/dying and it sends a jolt throughout your body, giving you that massive shock.

I prefer to think of it that way, myself.

      Freaky, yes.
It makes me think of how much my subconscious mind loves me.. Or how much my selfless brain is looking out for itself.

I've had these before. Whenever I have them, which hasn't been for quite some time now, I always end up falling and right when I am about to hit the ground its as if I actually fall into my bed. I mean it feels like I hit the bed and bounce. Its such a weird feeling.

You were probably abducted by aliens and then dropped back into your bed.

Anyway, yeah I've had those alot too. More often than not, they happen right when I first fall asleep, and then I'm jerked awake. Which sucks because then I have to calm down again to fall back to sleep. One time I was dreaming that I was in a hot air balloon race and a crazy kid (that looked alot like Kaniaz come to think of it) rammed my balloon with his big red one and I fell out of the basket. Which really sucked because I had a fever in real life and had JUST fallen to sleep. Stupid falling dreams. No idea what they mean. But like y'all I wake up before I hit the ground, and occasionally have that feeling too like I was dropped into my bed.

      I vote aliens.

I noticed that I had this sensation alot for about a week after a hernia surgery I had last year.

I was told this was common after someone has been under a general anethesia (SP?).

Normally it happens to me when I'm awake. I'm in the middle of my bed and Bam..I feel as if I've fallen off the edge.

Some say it means you grew....but that doesn't seem correct in my oppinion.

My falling dreams are more like falling "transes". I will be half awake and half asleep when I am "dreaming" about falling, just falling. A random falling. Usually ending up hitting a desert floor, VERY similar to Wile E Coyote. Actually, I think that's where I've gotten it from. But when I hit the ground I actually jump or jerk in bed. Interesting, yes.

I'm surprised nobody got this one, but a falling back into bed dream is an Out of Body Experience that aborted on takeoff.

They used to talk about the Chord Instability Zone, within about 10 yards or meters of the body, where any slight disturbance will bring the Astral Body crashing back into the body with just that sensation here described as 'falling'.

      Except this isn't Beyond Dreaming.

And besides, everyone knows you need fairy dust for obe's.

Wow, so I've had lots of OBEs. But then why do I feel like I'm still in bed?

Back in the old days, the Trinity of Experts on Astral Projection were Sylvan Maldoon, Oliver Fox, and Robert Monroe. I think that Sylvan Maldoon was the most outspoken on the Silver Chord Instability Region, but Fox might have mentioned it. I know that Bob Monroe has spoken regarding it.

The problem with OBE's, as the latest expert, Robert Bruce ( "Astral Dynamics" -- some very good concepts and intellectual models, with just a modicum of filler and new age hewey), points out is that the Memory stays with the Astral Body. with OBE's as well as with Dreaming, the first problem to be overcome is RECALL.

If one intends to practice OBE Recall, then the method is to take baby steps -- resolve only to just exit the body, get across the room and REMEMBER looking at something and immediately going back to the Body to file the MEMORY into the Conscious Memory. That will eventually open up the circuitry that allows for OBE Recall.

Wow that's interesting... But I don't know when I'm OBEing until I've suddenly come back to reality and jerked in bed, so how can I realize I'm not there when I do, I'll "come back"?
