You'll probably get mixed responses to that question; some will say it helps, some will say it hinders. It's personal. However, I think it's generally accepted that it negatively affects dream recall, meaning even if you do have a lucid dream, you're less likely to remember it.

On the other hand, though I haven't LDed yet, smoking tends to give me awesome dreams.

^ Yea there's lot's of threads about this already so you can search through those to see what others say about it.

But in my experience, my recall goes to shit if I smoke within a few hours before sleep. If I do remember anything it's usually pretty crazy, so that may help with lucidity, though I can barely remember anything except the last moments before waking so I don't know if it ever works. Also I seem to sleep heavier throughout the night and wake up less frequently so that prevents recording earlier dreams.

Also studies have been done that show weed suppressing REM sleep, but if you stop for a couple days dreams tend to become more vivid.

It depends how much you smoke, but I find that after burning yourself out without exercise you will have crazy dreams. Withdrawals can even bring about nightmarish dreams which if you are in control can become a regular dream just like that.
