      Falling asleep...too soon

When I first started my attempts at lucid dreaming, I was able to stay up fairly deep into SP before falling asleep and losing concentration. Lately, however, I seem to fall asleep much more quickly, before my SP even gets into full swing.

I know a lot of people have explained the transition into a lucid dream as starting to see an environment, then stepping into it, but I find that I only experience some hypnogogic imagery before everything fades black and I lose consciousness.

      Any ideas?

      Hmmm...

Are you very tired when you are going to bed? This happens with me more when I am very tired from a long day or hard working conditions.

Going to sleep earlier might help.

Changing your position or sleep location might help also.

Techniques to keep your mind awake might help, though I am loathe to suggest one. Each person has different variables that work for them and without understanding you and your sleep cycle in more detail I would hate to suggest something that wouldn't be right for you.

You might also try setting an alarm and waking in the middle of the night, after 4 to 6 hours of sleep, to get past that first REM cycle. The dreams and chances of lucidity are usually much better during the latter sleep periods.

If you are sleeping straight through the night and not waking up before your sleep time is over I would suggest you are tired for some reason. So many things can affect this - work, diet, stress, and each has its own effect on the body and your sleep habits.

See what I mean about not knowing enough about YOU to properly recommend something? Think about your habits and what could impact your sleep in your daily life. Write it down and report back.

Thank you, that seems to be some sound advice. While not usually lucid, I have noticed that I have my most vivid and remember-able dreams on nights where I wake briefly (usually around 3am-3:45am). So last night I set my alarm for 3 am and then went back to sleep. Turns out it did wonders for my dream recall, I was able to remember even the very minuscule details of my dream, such as temperature or weather, in addition to the important ones such as the plot. As for the whole falling asleep too soon thing, I think I'll try starting my attempts about 30min earlier. It's certainly worth a shot.

      Thanks a bunch.
