I can't say I've ever fallen asleep to music, however I do know from past experience that sounds can be heard and manipulate the dream. The reason I can never fall asleep listening to an isochronic tone
(a brainwave entrainer that doesn't require headphones) is simply because the app that it's on doesn't support a loop or a playlist so I manually have to pick up the phone and press play again. Is the music you're talking about looped? If not then I'm inclined to believe that it's because your mind is focussed on knowing the song will end, if it's looped then the subconscious responsibility of replaying the song will be loosed if not rid of entirely, that's if the fact the song will end doesn't distract you anyway. A shortened explanation is that basically I think you might be letting the music distract you even if you don't know it.
Try listening to soothing music or sounds, sounds of nature are lovely when you're tired and/or you're just trying to relax. I like your idea of soundtracks turning your dream into some sort of movie though.
