False Awakening, variation of Nose Pinch RC. What did you do when you heard youself breathing but were holding your breath? Should have done some reality checks.

I agree. That was most probably a false awakening. That happens usually in WILDs or DEILDs. Since you're maintaining awareness, usually the first dream setting you will be in is your room or the last place where you fell asleep. As for the breathing thing, it's the reason we do noseplug reality checks, because in dreams, we can breathe even though our airway is blocked.

Maybe it's a dream and if I scream, it will burst at the seams.

It was a hypnagogia hallucination. Basically, the half part of you that was dreaming was manifesting the noise. So it wasn't real. It could have been anything you heard instead of your breath, I mean it could have been a car horn or a voice, or just anything pretty much. The point is you don't have to be completely dreaming in order to feel some of the effects, just being drowsy and lying down can make you hear and see things.
