For me, flying is a lot like swimming. I don't have wings, and I don't need a running jump or a start from altitude or anything. Sometimes I need a little help to gain altitude though, like pulling myself up using tree boughs or jumping up onto a roof and springing from there. Mostly I fly at low altitude, and usually not very fast, although I'm conscious that I'm capable of astonishing speed.
Flying is one of my favourite dream activities, so keep it up. I'm sure you'll get the hang of it, and I hope you have many lucid flights!
