      disappearing landscape while lucid

I had a dream tonight in which I momentarily took conscious control and decided to fly. As I took flight, however, the landscape disappeared and did not reappear until I was no longer lucid. Is it typical to lose the imagery when developing the skill to control my action?

Yes, indeed it is. Search for "Nina's Stabilization & Clarity Tutorial" it really helped me.

Basically, the most effective technique seems to be using hand examinations and really studying your hands, then using verbal commands such as saying out loud "STABILIZE NOW" or "FOCUS NOW". Imagine yourself being anchored to the dream, solidly anchored.

Last night I went lucid after realizing I was controlling an object with my mind. I carefully watched my hands as they became more solid and stable. I forgot to do verbal commands and visualizing an anchor, though, so as I opened a window to go outside in my dream I had a thought pop in my head that I was going to lose stability. I tried to spin but it was too late, the dream was already fading too fast.

      Yeah yeah exactly
you need to "reconnect" with the dream, start with something small and familiar, easy to picture (hands are great, bcos you know, theyre kinda attached to you) look at them, feel the small ridges of your fingerprints... Then reach out and touch whatever you can see. Eventually your sight will expand. ;D

As mentioned above, it's all about getting your dream to become stable as it clearly isn't.

You need to try to connect to the dream and order it to stabilize because that is what you wish.
