There can be many reasons for not having success. I've been writing a dream journal since late October this year, and it's only just starting to pay off. I have to say though, I have no need to do reality checking throughout my day, and I rarely use "mantras". I did early on, but this was mostly to get myself a starting point. You will find that once you start having lucid dreams, you will quickly learn what works for you and what doesn't
Keep going, and at some point you will have succes. Lucid dreaming doesn't come equally easy for everyone, and for some it takes a lot of work. Be careful that you don't try too hard either, some people have experienced that as being disruptive. Sometimes, lucid dreams come only when you stop trying
