What reactions do you get when brining up LD with someone?

I'm sure many of you have experienced this dissapointment several times. In my somewhat boring life, I often bring up the topic of LD during conversation and see what happens. 99% of the time, the person will be highly disinterested in the subject and think I'm a nutcase. Add my spouse to the list of disinterested.

Out of all the folks I've shared this topic with, a whopping total of 1 was sincerely interested. He happens to be a Phd in pchsycology.

What is with everyone? Is everyone that narrow minded or that caught up in their everyday routine? Are we the only ones able to think outside-of-the-box? Or are we really mental?

What are your thoughts on why so very few are interested in this amazing experience we call Lucid Dreaming?

You know I have definitely had mixed responses when I bring up LDing with friends and family.

      Some responses:

my ex bf: oh yeah one time I did something like that

my sister: what? I do that all the time...doesn't everyone do that? it's nothing special

some friends: what the hell are you talking about?

some other friends: sounds cool, but we are really interested in hearing about it

So that's why I love DV so much...I can actually talk to other people with the similar interest in lucid dreaming without having to worry about other's responses. Also, keep in mind that dreams are very personal to each person and we might have a dream that is like amazing and exciting to us but to others its just sort of like...so what??

Your mental... get used to it. Remember lucidity is mentioned in the same breath as levitation, witch craft and astrology so it hardly suprising that many people think people that are intrested in the subject have a screw loose. I enjoy talking about it with intrested people, others well they don't know what they are missing.

My sister had the same response Aquanina, naturals are a little frustrating but I don't think she has lucids as high as I have them.

Yeah same here. I mean she acts all nonchalant about it like "psh anyone can do it, it's no big deal..." Now I KNOW that if she was having lucids as cool as I was she would think it was a much bigger deal. How can anyone ever get bored with this stuff? It's truly amazing.

LOL. I think I sensed this even before reading your response. I took one look at your avatar and thought to myself, yep -- this is the kind of message board I'm posting on!

Oh well -- I'll continue to NOT be ashamed of looking at things a different way.

I normally get: Yeah that sounds pretty cool, I think I'll check it out, then they try it for like a day, and they get all agitated.

Or I get: That sounds cool, but I don't think I can do it
To which i respond anyone can do it, and they say oh, but I'm just not that interested.

Out of all the people I have talked to most of them just are like whatever.

Dreamviews is actually one of the most down to earth forums that covers this subject, it would be nice to have more with many different views and feels but the subject is small (but growing).

Remember that lucidity itself was thought of by main stream science as nothing more than wishful fantasy before the reserch of Stephen La Berge, other "out of the box" subjects might go the same way... You could be living next door to blue people before you know it!

Most anoying are people who think that its just escapeism from reality, why sky dive in your dreams when you can do it in real life? They don't seem to grasp that lucid sky diving feels totally real and that you can do things that are completly impossible in real life, I don't see many sky divers get into the air without a plane!

Most of my friends have had a pretty neutral response. They believe in it, but they're not all that interested, partly because I dont think they understand just what lucid dreaming is and can be. A couple of my friends have taken an interest in lucid dreaming. One has a preoccupation with altered states of conscousness, so that didn't surprise me too much, and the other has tried lucid dreaming a few times, but not succesfully.

My mom has resonded pretty neurtrally to it, and doesn't show much interest. My dad, though, is pretty interested in lucid dreaming. We've had a few converstations about it, and he's had lucid dreams for years, though very infrequently.
Well life is short, so love the one ya' got, 'cause you might get run over or you might get shot.

"Amazing" is an understatement. Its 100x better than watching a movie. During LD, it is life-like with no permanent consquences.

I don't know, some times I feel ashamed to talk about it (too much), I don't know why, i just think that people critizing it so much made me feel bad about being interested in it. Its just that in a society like ours there's no room for stuff like that, or at least people that aren't like ours don't let it have room. But im very greatful that I have my brother that is so into it as I am, so we inspire each other and talk about it almost all day.
Not to many people are interested in it. I lost interest of it a few years ago because I didn't have anything to inspire on like for example friends that were in the same thing or at least people that was excited to hear me talk about it. When i found Dream Views i was really happy because its a great comunity were I can share all my thoughts.

I think if the subject wasn't so criticized Dream Views wouldn't exist because i think the website came out for the need to comunicate these experiences.

My friends think LDing is cool. One is a natural, he probably has a few a month. While I don't remember my dreams yet, but I will tonight. Just look at my Dream Journal tomorrow...

My friends try to act polite.
One time, there was a person pretending to listen, but I found out that she was studying on me for the FBI.....so I got ticked & chased her off!
Most of the time, people just tell me that they don't understand me, & they think I am special needs b/c I am interested in that kind of stuff (if I was special needs, I wouldn't have a 4.0 on my report card, would I?).
Michelle listens alot, & she loves talking about them, but she & I would actually rather talk about it through Telephone, so that teachers don't think we're nuts!
Splash was one of the only ones that actually listened. She told me all about them, & eventually became a member here (she told me that people look at her strange & don't understand her)!
Oh, & my cousin wants to learn about that, b/c she has only one ability I taught her...so she is VERY interested in learning.
      Other than that...

Yeah I've told a few friends and they were all polite but disinterested, except for my brother, who said he'd had one before. My wife is not at all interested, she says its "stupid".

I have yet to talk to anybody who says it's not possible. What a ridiculous shutting of the mind. I have heard people ask me if I am sure it's possible, but that's different. You can think about all kinds of things in dreams, so why would it be impossible to think about the idea that you are dreaming?

Everybody I have mentioned it to has been interested on some level. I have gotten a few people to actually do it. My brother loves it. My cousin is now looking into it. One of my best friends brought it up to me years ago, and I had never talked to him about it, I don't think. We have tried to dream share a few times, just for the fun of the attempt. Most of my friends think it sounds kind of interesting but don't feel like doing all it takes to pull it off. I think it's one of the coolest things there is.
How do you know you are not dreaming right now?
