For example, how long do you have to try a technique to see if it is effective for you or not? What techniques work most often and produce the best results? Should I even be focusing so much on techniques?
The time depends on the amount of mental effort you put into it, so it varies a great deal. Since you are already a lucid dreamer, it shouldn't be that difficult or take very long to get better, unless of course you tell yourself that it will. If you focus on it consistently it should be a matter of a few days to a few weeks.
If you have the time, I would focus on the WILD. Yes, it can be difficult for some people, but you won't know this to be true for you unless you try. It may take an initial time investment, but once you can do this it never leaves you, and as a bonus you can WILD in the early morning easily in a repeated fashion if you don't move (I believe they call that a DEILD here?). DILD is great but I prefer the clarity and control that I get with WILD. I am sure others here may vehemently disagree because their experience is different. My basic point: I would try them all, starting with the WILD while you have time for it. If you find it infinitely frustrating then give it a rest and try something else for a while. Use your intuition.
