      Scared to Lucid Dream.

Hello. This is the first post I have made on here, but that's not the point of this thread.
I have been intererested in lucid dreaming for a while, and only had one. I was at a party in some sort of swamp, when I appeared in a small pond. Suddenly, a shark-crocodile thing bit my leg off, and I realized that it didn't hurt and I must be dreaming. My leg reappeared and I went back to the party and then I lost memory of it. But in the time I've spent searching for tips on lucid dreams, I have found that terrifying things can happen, such as looking in mirrors and you will find monsters, or during a WILD you will be attacked. I know whatever you believe about lucid dreaming will be true inside the dreams, but that's the problem. I do believe it already, no matter how much I don't want to. I wanted to do another WILD tonight but I'm not sure I'm ready. Any thoughts?

You've probably read a bunch of those "scary" sleep paralysis stories. Lots of people try to make "sleep paralysis" seem like one of the scariest things you can experience. I do WILDs very often and have never once experienced anything frightening. If you can actually get yourself into the state prior to having a lucid dream, instead of being scared that something might happen, you should be happy and embrace the strange sensations knowing that you're about to go lucid. I think you're ready. Just try your best using WBTB method and when you enter the prior-dream state, just keep your eyes closed and try not to focus on anything or think to hard.

It's true that once you start slipping away, you might see colours or even pictures and visions. I've heard pots and pans falling in my house, but nothing "evil" or "scary" at all. It's actually quite fun to experience. Read this helpful explanation of SP by sivason if you haven't already http://www.dreamviews.com/wake-initi...explained.html It will definetly help you not be scared of SP

If you are afraid of WILDing, you also might try another technique.
Won't lie, you will have nightmares and you'll surely see some terrible things over time, but who doesn't? I'm not saying this as it will happen to you, it may, it may not. I usually have 1-2 nightmares, and a lot of violent dreams per week, yet when I get a nice and calm dream, whether I'm in real life or dreaming, in both I'm sure it was absolutely worth it.

      Thank you, everyone.
I've managed to go into SP before, I layed on my back for an hour and a half and didnt move. I was misguided, and I thought I would go in bed and with concentration, keep my mind awake while my body slept. My body did, indeed, sleep, but no visions because of, from what I understand now, I went to bed much too early and my body did not have any REM movement since I wasn't tired. So I'm going to try it tonight, and will set my alarm to around 3:30 AM. How should I prepare myself to do WILD at that point?

I'm not exactly scared of WILDing itself, but I'm scared of the actual dream.
If I try not to be scared, this just brings to mind what I DON'T want to see, and that will manifest itself in my dream.

Tip on that: Focus on other things and do something you like. Also, i've found it's easier (at least for me) to not think about something in dreams.
Also, if it DOES appear, you can confront it.

      Alright.
I read that if you show kindness/affection to the nightmarish character, it will return the favor. That makes a lot of sense, so i'll try to do it. But when I WILD tonight, are there any tips?
I'm really new to actually becoming lucid.

If you want to go for sure, let me tell you what I use. Maybe my dreams are more violent a little than the average, but these always worked:

I like firearms and blades anyway, so as I can legally have one already, bought mine. It's always in my pocket if I go somewhere, otherwise it's in my shelf always the same position. Even though this is not the reason why I bought it, as it's always with me, it's always in my pocket in dreams too. I had good use of it sometimes, but often as in real life, threatening is enough in dreams too.

I created a Dc who is more often / always with me, said she can do martial arts, he can greatly use swords, and she can easily protect me and herself if needed, moreover whenever I need her a yell is enough, if she is not there already. Worked so far, currently not but that's personal prob, it will work for you.

Or if you did any martial arts / fighting with anything, build up to that one, say that you are great in it, believe in it, and as it got basic, it's likely to work way more times than without real life experiences. However, even without it it can work.

And don't be afraid, try not to freak out. Good luck!

Wish I could have firearms in dreams... each time i shoot one, it turns into a toy gun that doesn't do anything.

Yeah, happens with me sometimes too, however I rather run out of ammo or aim poorly, even though I'm shooting pretty well. My knife, well, that never did fail me...

Maybe because I DILD I am missing something here, but if you are lucid and know you are dreaming, whats to fear?
Seems like dreaming and not being lucid would be scarrier. Ok, well I fear heights and once was licid holding onto a cliff and was scared, but knew no real danger could occur even if I felt the fear reaction, and i didnt try to wake up, although I did anyway.

In my first 2-3 lucids no matter what, I was scared like hell. Sometimes still afraid a little.

Ok, firstly, lucidity is just self-awareness, AKA knowing you're dreaming, and not different things. Dream control is just a bonus. Now, there is nothing to fear, it is all in your head, and you can control it. In fact, since you're scared of heights, keep going on heights and you'll stop fearing them. Next time, jump from a tall place and land safely.
