Ok, I thought about it some more, and here is my thinking: There are dreams in which we dream that a dream character is aware but the conscious persona we identify with in the dream is oblivious. Unless we assume that this is shared dreaming, which I think is one possible explanation, and in that case it is not that a part of oneself is aware but rather that someone else is contacting us who is aware, but if we do not make that assumption, could it be that a part of ourselves can be aware which is not where our conscious identity resides? Can awareness and consciousness be separated in one's mind? Also in waking life, we at times realize something, and realize that a part of our mind had realized it a long time ago but we were unwilling to acknowledge it. I think that it may be oversimplifying that I am just one identity, just one consciousness, capable of awareness. I may be much more complex than that. However, as awareness grows, as we become more self aware and / or closer to enlightened, the parts that were separate before may well connect into one awareness, which may be greater than the sum of its parts.
