Lucid Dreaming...Any advancements in the past few years?

About 8 years ago I used to be very into lucid dreaming. I was constantly on forums, and keeping my dream journal and doing reality checks all the time. For the past few years though I have fallen out of it, and only now am starting to want to lucid dream again. Since I have been out of the loop for so long, I'm curious as to what new advancements there have been over the past few years in terms of research, experiments, hardware, or ways to lucid dream easier. I think there are even institutes dedicated to lucid dreaming, so surely there have been some advancements in this area?

I always had a hard time entering lucid dreams, so convince me to start trying again!

I was out of the loop for around 2 years myself and the main things I've noticed are more induction techniques, notably DEILD and SSILD which I've been trying to experiment with a little. Also there seems to be a little more solid information floating around about sleep cycles and such, but it could be that I didn't pay as much attention before. Since you mentioned hardware I did notice a few digital aids such as smartphone apps that try to detect your sleep cycles and make noise to help you become lucid at the best time, even up to sleep masks that flash lights at you when you're in the proper stage. I don't know how far back some of these things really go but I don't remember seeing them around before.

The biggest advancements in Lucid dreaming over 8 years would have to be the integration of smartphone and tablet apps to help with keeping a dream journal. As Duke396 said there has also been a few lucid dreaming induction devices, the most recent of those been the Luci which has got a kick starter campaign in the last month or so.

I am unsure of how much progress has been made scientifically though.
They say dreaming is dead, no one does it anymore.
It's not dead it's just that it's been forgotten, removed from our language.
Nobody teaches it so nobody knows it exists.
The dreamer is banished to obscurity.
Well, I'm trying to change all that, and I hope you are too.
      By dreaming, every day.

Been out of the loop for 2 months myself, I guess I can share my best tip of Lucid Dreaming, I seen it around here somewhere too. Well, what always works for me, is either sleep too much, or even better sleep two times during one day. Sleep for 4 hours, wake up for either 5 minutes (you have to be out of bed those 5 minutes) or be awake for a few hours, and then go back for sleep, grantees a sleep paralysis for me at least, and high chance of a DILD too. The reason I don't do this right now is because I simply doesn't have time because of work (didn't even get vacation), and as long as I'm not bored out of my mind I'm not really that tired either. And if I wake up for 5 minutes, I might not get back to sleep, and I try to keep my sleep cycle as normal right now, so I'm not tired all day.
