I can relate. I've experienced dreams in 3rd person before as well, I've heard it's actually a common phenomena. It shouldn't be hindering your ability to recognize that you're dreaming, though.
You said that you don't perform dream checks during movies, because you tend to get immersed in them. So try working on getting yourself to perform dream checks in precisely that circumstance. You could even train your mind to stop and perform a check whenever something happens in a show/movie that tends to occur in your dreams. For example, you said that in the dream you were getting sexy with your ex. So, you could stop yourself and perform a dream check every time you see anything sexual or sensual in a movie, i.e. kissing, hugging, or sexual scenes.
