If you believe you can't, you won't. If you truly believe you can, convince yourself that you can, expect to succeed, then you will. It may take a while and some experimenting with different techniques; it may tak patience, it will take awareness, and it will require you to change (sleep longer, eat healthier, reduce caffeine, stop doing things on autopilot), and it may even require you to redefine yourself and your outlook on life in some ways. However, if you are willing and you expect it to succeed and you keep increasing your awareness, I believe that you cannot fail. I believe that everyone is capable of lucid dreaming, but some people need to put in way more effort than others in order to succeed.

Every single person on planet Earth can lucid dream. I can, personally, help you get there. Keep in mind, all you have to do is bust down that wall/barrier that is keeping your from lucid dreaming. Basically, you just need to have your first one. From that point on, it gets easier because your mind knows you can do it. You have to keep in mind that all the techniques you see are just guidelines constructed to help you along your path. Don't bank on the technique to provide lucidity, but look at it more like a boost to help you achieve your own goals.

First things first, you have to put forth some effort. Just reading a technique and performing it, is not going to be the most productive method. There are a few things you need to do.

#1. Is keeping a dream journal. you don't have to keep one on the site, but you need to keep a notebook at your bedside. Every morning you wake up, write down anything and everything you can remember. You have to build up quality recall to greatly improve your chances at becoming lucid. Dream Journaling is the best way to boost recall.

#2. You are going to want to start with DILD. Its the most common form of a lucid dream and the one that provides the most opportunity to become lucid. Take a look at my DILD guide, ADA, All Day Awareness. As opposed to being a set, by the books technique, this tutorial is more of a basis for achieving lucidity. Give it a read and it should help clear up a lot of different aspects of achieving lucidity. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask. I'll help you out in anyway I can !

You need to keep a positive attitude, and be patient. From what I can tell from your post, your greatest barrier to lucid dreaming is impatience.
Look at the positive attributes of dreaming, non-lucidly. You must crawl before you can walk. So crawl. Log your dreams and enjoy the experiences you have non-lucidly. Study your dreams. Understand how they work. When you understand your dreams, you will be able to recognize them. That's the first step toward lucid dreaming.

No amount of WILD, Ginko Biloba, and meditation techniques will force you into lucid dreaming. It's extremely difficult, and requires dedication and practice. You must be willing to do the work if you wish to reap the reward.

That is part of what intrigues me about lucid dreaming. I've always been a man of knowledge. I, being the sponge that I am, absorbed all the knowledge about dreaming that I possibly could. I know all about WILD and MILD, the science of sleep, different techniques for becoming lucid... I have all of the *knowledge* -- but what is important to know is that lucid dreaming is more about *SKILL* than it is about knowledge. You use the knowledge you gain to start out, but the only way to really do it is to keep trying. You will slowly build the skills needed to do it

I've been trying for about 2 months now...so far without success. But my efforts earlier were not as concentrated or informed as they have been this last week so 2 months is a misleading time period really. I've started following KingYoshi's advice about all-day awareness because I personally think that's my best bet too. I've not found it demanding so far, but I do 10-15 mins at a time and repeat it at intervals throughout the day...it's easy for me because I'm retired. Logic tells me that he's right. Mindfulness like that makes everything vivid and I suspect that, until we achieve lucidity, dreams look more faded and will eventually stand out for what they are...dreams...then the next challenges begin...THINKING they're dreams, maintaining stability within the dream and upping the LD rate...but that's for the future and the lay-scientist in me is loving the challenge and the insight into the workings of my mind

TC, judging from your original post, it seems like you are making several classic beginners' mistakes.

First of all, you sound very desperate and frustrated.
If you want to have good chances to become lucid, you need to have patience, and actually enjoy building up you lucid dreaming skills.
Replace frustration with excitement and you will be on the right track.
Ask yourself why exactly you want to have a lucid dream in the first place - this gives you something to feel excited about.

Secondly, you rely way too much on techniques.
You need to develop a belief in yourself and your own skills - now what do I mean by that?
Basically, I mean that you should find your own ways to become lucid, and understand what the key to lucidity really is.
Essentially, the secret to becoming lucid is to develop your self-awareness and critical thinking of your current situation.
Try asking yourself so-called "critical questions", like for example where you are right now, why you are there, what you are doing, why you are doing it, and so on - then make sure you can answer these questions without any hesitation.
If you keep doing this in real life, and actually put some effort into it, you will become so used to doing it that you start asking yourself the same things in dreams, at which point you will find you can't answer those questions and might become lucid.

Also, make sure you develop your dream recall by trying to write down your dreams as much as you can.
If your dream recall is poor then there is a chance you may have already had a lucid dream but forgotten about it.
I have experienced this several times myself, and the only reason I remembered a lucid dream was because I was confronted by a similar situation in real life that same day, otherwise I may have completely forgotten about it.
Besides, a dream journal actually helps you becoming more familiar with your dreams, which can make it easier to recognize them and become lucid.

And as for your original question - everyone can lucid dream.
You have ordinary dreams every night, since this is how your brain recovers - and you can be self-aware by examining your surroundings.
It's simply a matter of combining these two states.

P.S. about All-Day-Awareness. I think it's for me because I suffer a degree of memory-loss (probably caused by high Blood pressure) and ADA doesn't really NEED memory...it's being aware that something in a dream isn't right because you truly SEE reality using ADA. I've just has a shower and I noticed that the water stream consists of areas that reflect light and areas that don't and the shadow cast by the wash basin darkened when my shadow passed over it. That's typical of the ADA technique and I don't find it a chore...if I did maybe I shouldn't be trying to LD

Very nice! It sounds like you are well on your way in ADA. I also have a pretty poor memory, but anyone can work on awareness. It is one of those techniques that can be paired with pretty much anything else you want to try in your journey to become lucid. If it starts to get easy, ramp up the number of things you are trying to be aware of. If it gets tough, tone it down a bit and try to just stay aware of a select few things. Its got a lot of flexibility as well. Good luck to you and keep us updated on your progress. If you ever have any questions, don't hesitate to ask!

With doing anything where there are not any particular solid steps, it is frustrating.
You hear a lot of advice or what worked for others but it doesn't seem to help.
Sooner or later you come into advice that seems to feel right.
One thing you could do when tackling a new challenge is to piece together what seems to make the most sense from everything you have been told then create your own path.

Also when reading something, just try to remember the most valid stuff and forget the "filler".
