      Why do you do it?

I have been attempting to lucid dream for many months now. I feel like I am getting closer but haven't quite achieved lucidity.

Hopefully, with the intelligent people on this forum, I will get there soon...

I'm always interested to find out why others got into lucid dreaming and what they're trying to achieve out of it. I've found that lots of people like the feeling of control and self confidence they get from being able to do it and it has flowed over into their reality. This is what I'm hoping to achieve.

To generate my first discussion (I'm a newbie!) my question to you great folk is: why do you lucid dream? What benefits/abilities do you hope to achieve in everyday life by achieving lucidity?

      Hey there!

I have always been fascinated with the idea of lucid dreaming. At first, it was just the possibility of flying and creating something out of nothing. Being able to accomplish the impossible has always been something that has driven me to earn the art of lucid dreaming. As I did further research, I have developed other intentions. Recently I have become interested in researching Dream Characters and the idea of the dream-verse being one big connected world where all dreamers go when they sleep. Plus, a dream pioneer sounds like an epic title to hold

      Hi comrade

I started LDing for fun. The sex with anyone on command, flying, breathing underwater, passing through "solids," play-battlegrounds, etc.

Then it kinda' transformed on its own, culminating in 2 significant happenings:
      1 - meeting my guru/master/teacher
      2 - meeting a past life

After that, it came to me that experiencing travel to "distant" places (while LDing) in order to recover and read ancient texts (out of stock on earth) was tantamount.

As far as my everyday life goes, I hope to be able to keep growing on all planes of existence and hopefully I'll grow enough to pass something on to my child(ren) (or grandkids??) so that they may find the energy to "master" and practice some of the common feats that occur in dream-land - right here on earth.

Lucid dreaming helps me overcome my fears. I have Pure-O OCD. I used to dread dreaming. It felt like a waste of time. And my OCD sometimes kept me up at night and terrified me. Lucid dreaming gave me something to look forward to and taught me how to focus my thoughts (using MILD) and have a good sleep schedule.

Another thing I love going along with what DownrightDreamr said is the ability to accomplish the impossible. I haven't had too many self induced lucid dreams yet, but my favorite one was when I flew. It was amazing and I felt like I had actually done it.

And to go along with what obmij said, dream characters are fascinating. There's so much to discover and research. I've been doing some reading as part of my anthropology class on dreaming and recently did an essay reviewing a research paper on dream characters and their arithmetic abilities. They are really bad at math. But as one lucid dreamer said, he kept at it and they seemed to get better! Even though they are bad at math, they are extremely creative. They seem to have a violation of their own separate from our own violation within dreams.

One thing I believe is the possibility that dream characters are a connection to our subconscious. So I look forward to meeting more dream characters. I'm not sure if I believe if it's true or not, but I do think it's a possibility. The mind is so complex and interesting.

I fell away from lucid dreaming for a little while but every time I read about dreaming I got tempted to go back into it. It seems like a waste of time, right? What is the greater purpose? But I'm just drawn to it. For me, it's a therapy and a hobby. I had a really bad OCD attack one night while I was away from lucid dreaming which reminded me why I first started lucid dreaming. Now I'm back at it and so excited.
