It's a fine balance between a lot of things. Why it fails would probably also vary between people, but for myself it's the sleep schedule that becomes the most important. You need consistancy of the time you go to bed.. and time enough to get the full effect of the second big REM cycle.
But also how tired you are going to bed, if you had alcohole, coffee or any other stimulating substances.. And your general mental state - feeling stressed f.ex can easily work against you. If your room is sufficiently dark, if you get uninterrupted sleep, the temperature in the room..
Basicly, look at ANY difference between before, when the techniques worked, and now, when they don't.
That aside you can also expect SOME natural fluctuation ie. dry spells. - So don't get to worried about it, if you can't find a reasonable explanation.
