Hey there Rose,
The goal of WBTB is to get yourself into a state where you're awake enough so you won't immediately sink back into deep sleep, but not so awake that you can't get to sleep anymore. How we get to that state is different for everyone, and requires a bit of experimentation and trial and error. Some people only need to stay awake for three minutes, others require half an hour. Some people can stay in bed and not move, others have to get up and do some sort of activity. Some people won't be able to sleep anymore if they turn the lights on. Others have no problem with that.
I would advise you to avoid discomforts. If you feel you need some light, then turn on the light. If you feel you have to go to the toilet, then go to the toilet. You likely won't get to that state if you're not feeling comfortable.
Hope that helps, and good luck!
