Heya there,
I guess how easy or hard it is for people to get to the point where they start seeing hypnagogic imagery (HI) depends a lot on how they fall asleep and their personal physiology. Luckily, you don't really need HI to get lucid dreams.
For me though, HI happens automatically, providing I can quiet my mind enough. If I lie in bed thinking or visualising too much, it won't happen. However, if I can just relax, calm my mind, and try to be aware of any strange thought, imagining, or concept I find myself happen, the hypnagogics will grow from there.
Also note that HI aren't like dreams. Certainly at first, they're far less solid. They're more like day dreams, or just imaginings. Except that with daydreams/imaginings, you choose what you daydream about. With HI, it comes to seemingly at random (from your unconsciousness). They do get stronger as you pay attention on them, but at the start, they're very easy to dismiss for just a stray thought or a random imagine you conjure up in your mind.
Just my 2 cents,
