my best advice would be to talk to a doctor if you haven't already

just lie there and expect a dream

sing in your head "mister shadow send me a dream, make her the cuteist that I've ever seen" or something

if you want out of paralysis because you would rather have insomnia than a lucid dream, then just make tiny wiggling motions with only the vary tips of your fingers or toes, you should snap right out

Hi, i've been a long time dreamer eversince young. Me too had been experiencing many episodes of sleep paralysis (SP).

There was once this very frequent episodes when i was little (from childhood to young adulthood) that i keep having a dream in a dream. So inside my dream, at first i knew i was dreaming so i woke up (strangely the minute i realized and aware im dreaming then the dream would usually be awaken from...) but somehow for this few cases, after i woken up, im was suddenly stuck in a SP and can't move. Then, strangely someone would be sitting nearby to me (usually it is dark in the overall environment so visibility low and i can't tell is who or whether is a man or woman) but the someone would be staring at my direction observing me, no noise as not making any sound, just stare (we usually can feel the stare of other people despite not seeming their eye pupils clearly..this is human instincts and to digress, i've done a DIY test to try it out last time.) Then i would try my best to break free...either by trying to say short words like 'help' or roll my body over. It takes many attempts to succeed and be awoken from the dream. After such dreams, usually i do check with my family members if anyone noticed i was having nightmares (i used to call SP as nightmares as i generally many doesn't know what SP is about and last time lacking in knowledge on dreams) but apparently no one was beside me when i had my dream so the figure im seeing is not a 'someone' in my reality realm. And sometimes, if i've awaken from a nightmare and tried to sleep again, it usually ends up with SP.

i've tried checking on SP, it usually is under 2 possibilities of happening. Firstly, from medical wise, we could be too tired and our body muscles were too tense to the extend our muscles and nerves had been asleep for long but our minds were wide awake and only sleep later on and/ or the other way round when we are trying to wake up our body same situation whereby mind is conscious but body yet to regain power to wake up. And as figures or something we see could be our hallucination when we are tired, so to speak.

Secondly, is a more spiritual talking whereby just like in the movies, 'Awake' whereby our spirit could be out-of-body-experience so yet to fully return which is why we are unable to correspond when our mind trying to give instruction for our body to move but we are still not able to move it. This is up to different individuals as believing is there only when we believes it.

Next but without having scientifically proven and this may sound spooky, it is said to be also spiritual whereby some people are more into believing of the 'other worlds', from certain sources they do tell me that possibility whereby there's 'another' from a different realm at the same moment or time at the area (you may observe if SP happens to you when you are at the same room, same place, etc) who tends to be holding onto us (our body spiritually) so which is why we can't move and unable to utter a word during SP. So, it was then reasoned as no need to challenge nor fight back as it would be of no use and will be released whenever it does releases us.

Frankly, to me i do not rule out the possibility of having other 'unknown things' around us human world. But i chose to believe what i can be in control of, and as i'm from an educated background i do rely more on scientifically proven data and statistics first, before going into other inexplicable X-Files reasoning as last resort. But then of course, this is our own freewill to chose what we want to believe in. So, am just sharing on some of the info i've picked up along my journey of understanding the dreamworld and hope it helps you too...

P.S. More importantly, besides dreaming...sleep well and rest well for betterment of health.

      Good luck~! = )

well Michi just to make my point of breaking out more clear

when you are in sleep paralysis you can't move your legs, abdomen, shoulders arms or neck/head
but you should definitely be able to move your eyes, possibly swallow, control your breath rate at least to some extent

but ignore all that, while you can't move your legs or feet, you can wiggle the tips of your toes
while you can't move your shoulder or arms or even hands, you can wiggle the tips of your fingers

just as long as you do it just at the tips

the second you do you should feel your arms/legs unparalyze and feel like a weight is lifted from your chest even if you didn't realize there seemed to be one.

next time try it and see.

The shadow man in the room is just dream imagery. You can ignore him (that's what I would do) or you can transform the situation in some way (generate the feeling of love, for example). If you are familiar with the game Dungeons and Dragons, there is an option to "disbelieve" magical effects based on illusion. All you are doing here is disbelieving this guy, since he is a mental fiction and part of the dream landscape. He is not really there.

You do not need to see a doctor. Just become more familiar with what it feels like to fall into REM sleep. Good gateway for lucid dreaming.

Well in fairness to the OP I suppose I should point out that I have never woken to SP, and have never entered it other than voluntarily (in failed WILD attempt) usually I do manage to reach paralysis a few times in serious attempts, it has been a while now too but. At least when entering slowly from the waking state, it didn't come on fast. I also didn't experience anything except the inability to move (except of course if I wiggled my finger tips and broke out nearly instantly), I also had a feeling of being slightly compressed but I only noticed the reverse when I seemed to decompress as I came out, as If weight lifted from me.

So it may well be that waking into sleep paralysis is a bit different, but it is hard to see how re-entering it could be so different. Just be sure to try to wiggle those tips and you should break out.

As to 3cats post, I am still awake so if I had the sense of a monster (or whatever) it would be more a hallucination in my opinion rather than a dream image, but hypnagogic or hypnopompic either way I have never experienced anything like that.
