@ Slash112 & Venryx - Thanks for the support, I really appreciate it!
@Him - That's fantastic news. I'd love to hear about your dreaming experiences from that night. Perhaps if you can find the time, maybe you could post your experience in the YouTube comments, it would certainly help inspire other dreamers.
@Goldenspark - Well, the technique is designed to be used as part of a wider lucid dreaming strategy, a supplementary extra to boost your DILD chances. So the assumption is that you'll also be performing reality tests during your waking hours, so it's a good idea to include a reality test whenever you handle the box - so a mistaken opening while being awake should never occur. As for the dream world, I've found all manner of peculiar scenarios where the box has been open, or stranger still, appeared in a completely different form. So yes, it's a case of using it as a trigger for lucidity. There are, of course, cases where the box has been open within a dream, and I've missed the cue - generally because I allowed myself to mistakenly believe that I was awake, and became angry that I'd opened it in the wrong situation. However, once you start practicing using strong emotions to cue reality tests, that issue fades away.
Most of the techniques I share can be used stand-alone, but really work best when combined with a more diverse set of lucid dreaming techniques and practices. I prefer to give people as many tools as possible, so they can build an effective set of practices that suit their own needs and dispositions.
