I want to make something clear... from personal experience I'd say that you DON'T have to do reality check to experience lucid dreams. Reality checks help you determine it's a dream, your lucid awareness comes before that. I had been spontaneously aware it's a dream and gone about it without even doing reality checks. If It's a WILD, you especially don't have to fret over doing reality checks at all as you maintain your awareness from waking to dream and there is nothing more to verify. You already know it's a dream.
Anyway this reminds me of the time my significant other used to tease me by preventing me doing reality checks when I practiced doing reality checks. When I try to look at my hands she would sometimes cover it up and wouldn't let me count fingers. After a couple of times she says if this happens then to just assume it is a dream until I get a chance to verify later. She said she didn't want me to be too reliant reality checks to become lucid. Now she has passed away, but sometimes a hyperconscious version of her does appear in dream and ask to do a reality check. I wonder why thinking it's not a dream while it actually is. Just as I try to look at my hands or try to do nose pinch breathing, she stops me saying "try to feel if it's the waking reality or not". I know this will be a bit confusing story without knowing the whole thing, but the gist of it is to not to be too reliant on reality checks alone.
