      Do Lucid Dreamers....?

Im reading a book right now called Creative Dreaming. Here is a quote straight from the book:

Flying dreams often precede lucid dreams. In fact, lucid dreamers have many more flying dreams than the ordinary dreamer.

So, does anyone think that this is true?

Perhaps... For instance, if you do lots of flying in your lucid dreams, you'll probably think about flying more, and flying will become more common as something you 'do' in life, causing it to come up in regular dreams more often. Just a guess though.

Pffft. I do not belive that at all. I Lucid dream frequently and I hardly have flying dreams. Even when I am Lucid, I do not like to fly alot. I think that book made a horrible generalization based on no facts for that statement. Its like saying that people who eat uslaly eat crackers before bed. Eh?? exactly

Considering that one of the favorite things to do during an LD is to fly, I wouldn't be surprised.

I don't know whether someone has tried to measure this phenomenon. It would be quite easy with some basic statistics and a good database on dreams content.

I guess that flying is so unusual that it is an easy dreamsign that triggers ludicity. On page 150 of his "Exploring the World of Lucid Dreaming", LaBerge confirms that, adding that flying is a good reality check.

      In summary, given that
      1. Flying solicits LD
      2. Flying is used to check dreaming

it may be true that lucid dreamers fly more than normal dreamers.

In any case, flying and dreaming are quite connected.

I think it depends on the person......I would think, but then again, who knows?

      Well... it could be.
I don't have many flying dreams while I'm non lucid maybe there is the one time when I'm flying but it never happens often to notice a pattern. Though when I'm lucid I make that choice to fly but I don't fly all the time .

For sure I know in my case it would be true that "flying dreams" occur more when I'm lucid than when I'm not . But I don’t know if I would use that for a general statement.

Well, the 2nd LD I ever had was right after a flying dream, but I don't really think they effect frequency of LDs that much, unless a certain person has flying as their main goal for LDing or something...

I don't know myself what is fact. I would suspect the author had done some research into it before writing it.
To me flying is one of the most easy things to come by when I lucid dream.

For real?? I thought that staement was totaly rediculous. It must depend on the person beacse Flying is hardly involved in my Lucid and nonlucid dreams.

Well that may be true, but look at it this way. You've been on this forum for a while, right? Now, how often has the topic of flying in dreams come up? The correct answer is: nearly every single day. Flying is usually one the FIRST things that people choose to do upon becoming lucid, especially for people who are new to lucid dreaming.

Now, you've probably talked to friends of yours about dreams you or they had, right? I'm talking about non-lucid dreams here. Now, think of all the times you've talked about dreams with your friends- how often did they mention flying in their dream? Probably rarely, if ever. Flying is just not a common theme in dreaming, which makes sense because people can't fly. Usually (but not always, admittedly) flying in itself will alert somebody to the fact that they're dreaming.

Here's yet another way to look at it. Think of all the non-lucid dreams you ever had, especially the ones you had before you learned about lucid dreaming. Think of about what percentage of these dreams involved you flying. Now, think of all the lucid dreams you've ever had, and think of about what percentage of these dreams involved you flying. I rest my case.

It seems that this should be pretty obvious.

      Why not? It's flying.

I'm more surprised that you think that it's surprising other people dream of flying more, than I am surprised that you don't have many of them.

You're a joker so I kind of think you're pulling my chain, but if you're serious then I'd really like to know what you think on why that isn't so, or why you're not interested in flying, etc.

If flying dreams often proceed lucid dreams then I think a pole would have to or should have been taken from LDers. If it is true then in my case it took 50 years to work. I have had a lot of non-lucid flying dreams since I was about 5 years old. Then had a Lucid Dream at 55. Wow, what a proceeding .

Wll, I am not kidding. I do understand now that ucid Dreams woudl have more flying dreams beacse they can do it. But for real, I do not fly often, from time to time yea, but its nto the first thing i will do. Id much prefer to walk around my dream world and tlak to the DCs and look at the sky, or swim in the ocean than fly. I do liek to jump off of high things, but i just like to fall untilt he last second. I used to be afraid of heights for the longest time until a few years ago, maby that has something to do with it. Whne I was younger I woudl always fall when i tired to fly. I think it was from the same reason I became Lucid. There is this movie called Little NEmo trhat i used to watch and it opens up with Nemo flying on his bed and then everything turns all dark and evil and he falls to his doom =/ Hahaa, I guess I wil just to to try flying out again? But i usppose ti was my fear of heights that I had for a long time that I didnt fly. But i am not afraid anymore, ebacse of dreams ( the jumping of hihg places thing_ I will try to fly again.

Why doesn't someone start a poll to see what the response is to this? Do you like flying in your dreams or not. I'm sure it would be (a bit) more informative than the lucid dream-coma poll posted some time ago.

I admit that because i can only jump of buildings and fly to wherever I want in dreams, it's definitely high on my "Great things to do in waking and/or dreaming life" list.

well there was like a few pages that were in the book that talked about flying, but I was just curious about what you guys thought.

Personally, Flying is one of the last things on my mind in Lucid Dreams, mainly because I just don't find it that fun to do, and never really have wanted to fly in my dreams.
