Did they mention anything of FMRI scans ( functional magnetic resonance imaging) Or PET (Positron emission tomography scans ). A brain imaging scan?
From what I have read about brain scanning in scientific American, these two often go hand in hand. They did not come right out and say it, but after reading the article you get that impression.

Maybe it was EEG?
I don't remember that one!
