I don't know if you've tried any deep breathing exercises, but I think if you took deep breaths and only concentrated on breathing, the effort of keeping focused may disengage your brain to fall to sleep.
I don't know about ice cream, but I would think hot drinks like tea and hot cocoa may make you feel more relaxed, and therefore make your body feel more sleepy.
I'm not an expert on sleep (and I've had a few nights when I've laid awake for hours), but maybe this will help. Good Luck (and sweet dreams! )
